Volume & Tight

In this golden age of wider bottoms, slim pants take on new charm when paired with a loose top. Women can opt for men’s shirts. Then there’s the denim jacket, which is designed to be oversized. Luca studies painting at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, the city’s premier art school. In her words, European preppy has an “elegant, beautiful image.” Much like a French work jacket, the striped linen blend chore coat pairs perfectly with this season’s baggy jeans in a rinse wash. Visiting an iconic art supply store near her school, Luca opted for a trad look, with a unisex blazer and white denim. This brilliant green tucked-in shirt is from the men’s collection. Her delicate gold necklace gives the outfit an elegant touch.

Jaz Bamberski

Jaz was born in Paris and raised in San Francisco. “This is the place to study fashion,” he says, explaining how two years ago, he moved back to his home city to attend the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM). Modeled by Jaz with the zipper half-up, this classic Harrington jacket is made to have a tailored fit. It’s worn here with a pair of white barrel pants from UNIQLO : C, this season’s baggiest option. These proportions and the clean presentation are hallmarks of today’s Parisian preppy style.

What is European preppy style?

Preppy fashion started in America. Europeans imported this style and adapted it to suit our sensibilities. This meant doing what we do best: refining and elevating the core elements.

Preppy style’s strength is blending casualness and functionality. It came about in the 1950s as an answer to the active lifestyles of students at Ivy League schools in the Northeast US, allowing them to move seamlessly from class to other activities. Loafers you can step into, without bending over. Loose-fitting chinos. College sweatshirts, Oxford shirts a little on the wrinkled side. And blazers?　Only on special occasions. Before preppy became a style, it was simply a matter of convenience. It’s all about comfort and a broken-in feel, no decoration or pretention. And let’s not forget, a pervasive spirit of sportswear.

In the 1980s, the style evolved in the hands of Europeans. While retaining the main characteristics and relaxed bourgeois feel, it became more refined and evolved. One might say preppy made a shift toward elegance. Chinos, with their origins in the military, were replaced by white jeans, more prone to soiling but with a sexier style. The disheveled untucked Oxford was tucked in and unbuttoned at the chest. Polo shirts became more fitted. Sweaters were draped over the shoulders to emphasize the physique. Scarfs and bandanas tied around the neck. The loafers stayed, but with a higher polish, complemented by bright socks.

The use of colors, overall, took on a European feel. The color palette grew, keeping earth tones like ecru, brown, beige and ochre as a base while adding primary colors and sunny hues. Red, blue, green, yellow, turquoise... Color combinations, too, became much more important. Beige with red or yellow, navy and apple green, red and pink, brown and sky blue. Black, however, is strictly off-limits. That’s one rule that remains unchanged, regardless of the era or the continent.

Changing Colors, Unchanged Scenery

Pastel buildings are a perfect match for this season’s SUW. Up close, you can detect several careful layers of paint. If you compare photos from a few years back, some buildings have changed color entirely. This all started with the colorist trend led by local artist Butch Kardum in the 1960s, when many of the city’s iconic Victorian homes were painted vibrant tones, changing the face of SF to this day.

This keeps things very interesting for runners. Thanks to the grid of streets, you’ll suddenly pass by a majestic view of the ocean, offering a glimpse of Alcatraz Island bathed in light.

Downtown, a darling railcar rattles up the street. The colors of the city may change, but some things about San Francisco never do. The hilly streets are truly unforgettable. If you have the chance to go for a run here, head for the picturesque lookout of Twin Peaks. The extreme slopes are sure to carve a space into your memory.

A Range of Different Whites

From sheer bright whites to warmer off-white tones, the nuances are endless. Seemingly neutral, white is perhaps the deepest color of them all. UNIQLO is known for its color options, and it’s rare for white not to be offered. Yet even the same white will come across differently in different fabrics, like cotton or linen. These tones have many names, from the hakuji glaze used for white ceramics to the ecru of unbleached cotton and the milky tone of cream, demonstrating how the nuances of white have left an imprint on language.

The layered looks shown here combine the varied whites of different natural fabrics such as linen. Breezy and relaxed, these items somehow also make you sit up straighter. This year, refined whites are sure to add even more depth to your wardrobe.

In 2013, just after becoming a Global Brand Ambassador for UNIQLO, Adam Scott won the Masters. Amidst a busy worldwide travel schedule, he sat down with us for an interview in Tokyo. Adam's every word brims with the spirit of golf.

Q1. How did you discover golf?

I played golf with my family from a young age. People start young in Australia. I've been swinging a club since I was two. Then when I was five or so, I remember seeing a famous pro golfer on TV and thinking, "I want to do that!"

Q2. What's the best way to maintain your motivation?

I think, until you achieve all your goals and dreams, there is always this motivation to keep going. Everybody dreams big as a kid. But dreams don't come true overnight. I've been able to achieve a great deal, but many of my dreams are still out of reach. As soon as you finish one thing, you set your sights on another. That's continued to this day. Golf stands out from other sports because there are so few opportunities to win. It's important to learn from the failures, finding something positive to help you grow.

Q3. What's the best part about being a pro golfer?

There are so many things. Because I'm really just living my dream. Of course, winning tournaments is very fulfilling, but along the way, I've had the opportunity to travel the world playing golf in all these gorgeous places.

Q4. It’s often said that golf is a sport with values. What makes someone a person with values?

I have some friends that I look up to who I think are good role models, and most of them play golf. In this sport, we’re our own referees. If we make a mistake, we have to give ourselves a penalty. Golf is about honesty and integrity. If you apply the rules to life, you’ll make yourself a positive example. That’s why I encourage children to play golf. It’s great for building character.

Adam demonstrates his swing at a driving range in Toranomon, a district in central Tokyo where high-rises stand among historic architecture. His impeccable swing has been called the most elegant in the world.

Q5. You were born in Australia and now live in Switzerland. What do you like about these two cultures?

I think the Australian lifestyle is quite casual. Maybe it's because I was born there, but I'm a pretty easygoing type. So that’s quite appealing to me. Switzerland is almost the opposite. And it's such a beautiful country. When I went pro, I was playing mostly European tours. That's when I decided I wanted a house in Switzerland. It's very different from Australia, but I like it a lot.

Q6. What destinations have stood out to you the most?

The Taj Mahal in India. Quite an amazing experience, like an adventure, traveling down there. And the Great Wall of China was also incredible.

Q7. What led you to start the Adam Scott Foundation, which provides education opportunities for children and young people?

When I participated in my first PGA Tour, I learned that most of the proceeds for the tournaments go to projects that give back to local communities. This was around the time that they were celebrating total donations surpassing 1 billion dollars. I was twenty-five years old, and deeply moved by the idea that if you stick with things, you can make a huge impact. The foundation focuses on giving educational opportunities to kids. I'm trying to help kids reach their dreams by lending a helping hand.

Q8. As a Global Brand Ambassador for the past 12 years, what are your thoughts on UNIQLO?

I feel UNIQLO has a strong philosophy of MADE FOR ALL, for everyone. I think a company or brand has to be very strong in its foundations and principles to be successful without using the logo everywhere. I very much like that UNIQLO feels like it's truly made for everyone. These clothes are so accessible. Golf, though, has these strong associations as an elitist sport. I'd like to bring the MADE FOR ALL philosophy to golf, to make it something anyone can play.

Q 9. Is there something from UNIQLO you couldn't live without?

Picking one thing is impossible, so I’ll give three. First, the AIRism undershirt. It’s so comfortable and looks great. You can even wear it as a top layer. I wear mine every day. Then there’s the Extra Fine Merino Sweater. It’s lightweight, soft, and classic. Perfect companion to travel everywhere. Then I’d say the Miracle Air pants. They fit great and work with everything. Truly an everday essential item for all.

Q3. What's the best part about being a pro golfer?

There are so many things. Because I'm really just living my dream. Of course, winning tournaments is very fulfilling, but along the way, I've had the opportunity to travel the world playing golf in all these gorgeous places.

Q4. It’s often said that golf is a sport with values. What makes someone a person with values?

I have some friends that I look up to who I think are good role models, and most of them play golf. In this sport, we’re our own referees. If we make a mistake, we have to give ourselves a penalty. Golf is about honesty and integrity. If you apply the rules to life, you’ll make yourself a positive example. That’s why I encourage children to play golf. It’s great for building character.

Q10. We've heard you're a big fan of Uniqlo U.
What attracts you to this collection?

I like the silhouette because it's a bit different than what I play golf in. When I'm away from the course, I want to feel like a different guy!

Q11. What makes you feel refreshed?

Going to the ocean. I surf and swim. It's good for the mind and heart.

Q12. Do you golf with your family?

Both my parents play, and my eight-year-old son loves the sport. He plays with me, but he doesn't listen to me. So, I try not to teach. Instead, I try and get him to watch other good players.

Q13. What's the best way to get better at golf?

Step one is to enjoy yourself. To do that, first you need to lower your expectations. Then you can just have fun.

Founded in 1916, Japanese restaurant Hachimaki Okada has been a favorite of literary greats. Third-generation chef Kozo Okada honors the flavors of the original menu. One of Adam's favorite dishes was their signature awafu dengaku.

Q14. What are your weaknesses?

We could spend lots of time talking about this! I'm not so good at sorting out priorities. I'd like to work on that. I can also be rather fixated on golf, even when I'm with my family. I'm afraid this doesn't make them very happy.

Q15. What three things would you bring to a deserted island?

A golf club, for sure. It's a bit sad that my golf club is probably my most valuable possession. I suppose I'd also take a ball and gloves. If I could take people with me, I'd of course bring my family. I'm not very attached to things.

Q16. What's your advice for those trying to excel in their field?

Believe in yourself. People kept on telling me that I was very talented, but there were times I couldn't believe it. But once I started to believe it too, I saw results. Time keeps moving on, which means less time to achieve things. That's motivated me to try my best. Sometimes I look in the mirror and tell myself, "You can do it." It's still hard. But if you set your heart on it, you'll find a way.

Born in 1980 in Adelaide, Australia. Adam was attracted to golf from a young age, and has stood out since his days as a junior player. He went pro in 2000. In 2001, he won his first professional title at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, and in 2002, he placed ninth in his first Masters Tournament. In 2013, he became the first Australian to win a Masters Tournament. Reached number one in the World Golf Ranking in 2014. A formidable presence at major competitions for many years, Adam has 14 PGA Tour wins and 11 European Tour wins, as of November 2025. During his time as a UNIQLO Global Brand Ambassador, he's helped develop Miracle Air pants, based on the philosophy that “look and fit are both essential to a good play.”

Interview with Cecilie Bahnsen

Romantic accents for everyday wardrobes.
Based in Copenhagen, the brand Cecilie Bahnsen offers a unique approach to style.
Cecilie shares how her design ethos has commonalities with UNIQLO.

Natural light streams into the studio in Østerbro on the outskirts of Copenhagen. Cecilie wears a sequined top that she designed herself, layered over a Dry Color Crewneck T-shirt from the UNIQLO men’s collection.

Captivating items for everyday wear.

Cecilie Bahnsen’s studio is lined with voluminous dresses and baby pink blouses decorated with delicate florals. Her brand’s emphasis on bringing a gentle romanticism to everyday items has won fans all over the world.

“Just like with LifeWear, we put a lot of value into everyday clothes. It’s not just about dressing up, it’s about clothes that work for you, and growing into them. That’s the sort of fashion I aspire to.”

This is the spirit behind “Everyday Couture,” a phrase that speaks to the brand’s values over the past decade.

Cecilie spends a great deal of time at this work station, going over fabrics in her studio. Managing a full team of over thirty people, she spends her days hopping from Copenhagen to London or Paris.

Making clothing to be cherished.

“To me, UNIQLO has a unique understanding of ease and quality, creating pieces for everyday that inspire me and connect to our brand values,” says Cecilie. Even with so much resonance between the brands, one would think that Cecilie Bahnsen known for flowy fashion pieces, would have a different approach to design...

“My hope is that these clothes add comfort to the lifestyle of whoever wears them. Incorporating design elements that make you fall in love at first sight, these items emphasize ease and breeziness. As shown in today’s look, a seemingly dressy item can be made casual if you style it with an everyday T-shirt. It’s good to do something unexpected, like pairing a dress with a bow on it with jeans and riding a bike. These are clothes that make you want to wear them right away, and feel that way for your whole life. The ideal wardrobe is built slowly over time, solving little everyday problems, or filling in gaps, until you wind up with a perfect style. UNIQLO’s idea that favorite clothes should last really resonates with me.”

Centering on the everyday, maintaining a natural posture. This stance shows up in the forward-thinking nature of the brand’s designs.

“For our 10th anniversary collection released in Fall 2025, we made dresses using leftover fabrics. We keep all the fabrics we’ve developed. I get so much inspiration looking at what we’ve already created. It’s about working with what’s there, more than feeling like you need to keep doing something completely new. I also think that as an independent brand, it’s part of what gives you your DNA. I’m quite nostalgic, so I also love keeping things. There’s such a beauty to that.”

Just as she says, the studio is well-stocked with many kinds of cloth. Cecilie is currently fascinated by, of all things, jersey fabric.

“We tried a little before, but now we’re delving even deeper. We’re looking for an easy fit shaped with stretchy materials, something a little edgy, so it expresses the character of the person wearing it. Jersey also works great in items for kids. That’s something we’ve been wanting to create. I think it would be so cute if we approached children’s clothes in the same way we do items for grownups.”

Cecilie says she gets her design inspirations while enjoying a morning coffee in the easygoing Østerbro area, where her studio is located in Copenhagen. The city is known widely as a source of fashion trends, largely due to Cecilie’s efforts.

“Time flows differently here than in Paris or London. We have some distance from the commercial influence of bigger cities. Call it a slower tempo. In the Copenhagen architecture and furniture scenes, they put major stock in timeless beauty. But we were kind of missing the same thing for fashion. I wanted to see if I could build on these same design values, creating something that would become a tradition. These days, the city has become home to a diverse array of fashion talent, adding new depth to the creativity and charm of Copenhagen.”

Cecilie Bahnsen

Fashion Designer

Born to a mother who went from modeling into nursing and a doctor father, Cecilie showed interest in fashion and design from an early age. After graduating from the Danish Design School, she worked as an assistant for Danish designer Anja Vang Kragh, working on costumes for the Royal Danish Opera and projects for Christian Dior. Later, she worked under John Galliano before heading to graduate school at London’s Royal College of Art. Afterwards, she worked as a design assistant at London-based brand ERDEM before returning to Copenhagen in 2015, where she launched Cecilie Bahnsen.

made by UNIQLO to this day.

Absorbing sweat and quickly drying. That’s what makes the UNIQLO items labeled DRY-EX special, but to meet this standard, they need to follow certain rules: moisture droplets must be fully absorbed into the fabric in a matter of seconds*; and moisture content must be reduced to less than a few percentage points after one hour**. Fabrics must satisfy both of these criteria to qualify. That’s because DRY-EX isn’t a material; it’s the name of a standard. This framework can be applied not only to jersey knits like T-shirts and polo shirts, but to other everyday items like hoodies made from thin material.

DRY-EX first came into being when UNIQLO brand ambassadors Shingo Kunieda and Kei Nishikori, who were helping us to make the clothing that they wore in tennis matches, asked if there was any way to elevate the existing standards. A decade later, the knitting machine pictured continues to be a major driver of innovation. These machines allow for garments to be made in one continuous process, just like innerwear and socks. This means the mesh and fabric layers of the T-shirts and polos can be knitted seamlessly. Yarn spun in the blue lower chamber is dispensed from the duct at the rear. This analog setup belies a product so advanced it would be fair to call these clothes wearable technology.

Structure

Let’s first explain how drying works in the fabrics used for T-shirts and polos. The knits of the interior and exterior are linked. The outside consists of irregular cross-sectional polyester fibers, the surface area of which is increased by minute grooves that elevate the evaporation rate. The inside consists of circular cross-sectional nylon fibers. Contacting the skin, these fibers wick away sweat. Swiftly transferring absorbed moisture to the surface fibers helps to prevent the fabric from sticking.

Mesh

Optimizing the density of the knit to make the most of each surface’s characteristics smooths out the pathway from absorption to transfer to dispersal to evaporation, yielding a material that keeps you crisp and dry even when you sweat. Adding mesh gives the fabric increased breathability, plus it’s engineered to speed evaporation. And to help against the summer heat, this season’s T-shirt has about 30% more mesh.

Seamless

Another amazing aspect of the knitting machine is that the use of mesh can be adjusted precisely. To maximize functionality, the fabric can vary by area, with mesh used in sweat-prone spots like the underarms and back while opting for a denser weave across the chest. This allows an item to be knit all in one piece, including any tapering at the sleeves and waistline, preventing the chafing or bulkiness caused by seams. Fine-tuning the knit gives the interior loft and a pique-like feel. It also helps to reduce transparency.

UV protection

Though we’ve been talking about T-shirts and polos in terms of fabric, don’t forget that DRY-EX is a standard. Jackets have this incredible drying ability as well. The breathable and quick-drying DRY-EX hoodie is stretchy and has UV protection (UPF 50+*1), almost like a wearable parasol. It’ll even keep you comfortable under the summer sun.

Roger Federer speaks to the comfort and reliability of DRY-EX.

UNIQLO first released the DRY-EX polo shirt modeled by Roger Federer in 2018. It has now been eight years. We asked Roger to share his thoughts on the latest DRY-EX items from his namesake collection, and how well they work for tennis.“What I like about DRY-EX is that it feels effortless. It moves with you, stays light, and keeps you comfortable even when the intensity goes up. You don’t have to think about it, which is exactly what you want on court.”

This season’s two models cover styles both on and off the court.“They both feel great to wear, but each has its own character. One is a bit more performance-focused, the other more relaxed for off court. The fit is clean and comfortable. The green and blue give the collection a fresh, modern look.”What does DRY-EX mean to Roger?“I was impressed by the quality of the material when I first wore it back in 2018, and it’s only improved since. While on tour, I could always rely on it. Over the years, DRY-EX has continued to evolve with new designs that feel current while keeping the same high standards.”

This spring, we’re opening UNIQLO Myeongdong, a new global flagship store in the first three floors of a hotel building in this bustling area. Boasting 3,200 ㎡ of retail space, the store has services like UTme! and RE.UNIQLO STUDIO as well as pickup lockers on the first floor. The massive LED logo is just right for the modern facade.

Seven Myeongdong Classics

CD & Record Store, Buruttrak

Buruttrak (“Garden of Taste”) opened for business in 1978 and has been operating out of the current four-floor building since 1995. Famously used as a location in films like The Contact (1997) and the 2012 drama Reply 1997, the store feels like a time warp back into the late 1990s. The first two floors, stocked with K-pop and soundtracks to Korean dramas, are popular with tourists, hence the selection of branded goods. Visit the third floor for an assortment of classical records.

Coffee & Tea, Eulji Dabang

Established in 1985, Eulji is a bastion of Korea’s “dabang” cafe culture. Popular items include ssanghwa-tang (6,000 KRW), a traditional herbal tea served with an egg yolk, but the naeng-keopi (iced coffee, 5,000 KRW) is not to be missed. Until second wave and third wave coffee hit Korea, this chilled drink served with milk and sugar was the people’s choice.

Myeongdong’s Classic Underground

Located in central Seoul, historic Myeongdong charms visitors with its labyrinthine streets. Here and there, you’ll find still more streets underground, giving walkers a way to zip from one place to the next. Don’t miss the shops along the underground streets connecting Namdaemun Market and Myeongdong, or Euljiro and Dongdaemun History & Culture Park. This is a great place to check out a unique aspect of life in Seoul, where everyday shoppers mingle with those fleeing the heat, the cold, or rainy weather.

Built in the booming 1960s and 1970s, these subterranean streets have no shortage of old-school shops. Located only a few minutes on foot from UNIQLO Myeongdong is the Hoehyeon Underground Shopping Center, another blast from the past. Opened in the late 1970s, this arcade has loads of shops devoted to analog media like records, stamps, coins, cameras, and books.

These underground streets also function like a pipeline linking otherwise disconnected areas. Some of the connections may come as quite the surprise!

Italian Restaurant, La Cantina

The first Italian restaurant in Korea opened in 1967. For ages, these opulent interiors have been synonymous with a certain kind of Western cuisine in Seoul. For something special, order the off-menu Samsung Set (55,000 KRW), named after the founder of Samsung Group, who was a regular. The tried-and-true combo of bread, soup, pasta, salad, steak, dessert and coffee is sure to leave you feeling satisfied.

Kyobo Book Centre Gwanghwamun

The flagship store of Kyobo Book Centre, Korea’s largest chain, is located at the heart of Seoul in Gwanghwamun Plaza. Opened in 1981 on the basement level of the Kyobo Life Insurance building, designed by César Pelli and built in 1980. The sprawling 8,595㎡ space has a huge selection of literature, art books, and business-related volumes along with departments for knickknacks and stationery, as well as a gallery featuring paintings by literary greats. Far more than a bookstore, this is a favorite meet-up spot and a destination for the entire family.

Cold Noodles, Jinju Hoegwan

Located on the west side of Myeongdong, the City Hall district is another bustling historic area full of beloved shops. This noodle restaurant opened in 1962 is a perfect place to try Kongguksu (16,000 KRW), a summer staple. Jinju Hoegwan makes the soy milk broth of this cold noodle dish extra thick. The beany flavor shines through without any additional salt. We recommend seasoning with a bit of the house-made napa cabbage kimchi.

Tea, Arcade Tove

Cafe opened in 2025 in the basement of the Korea Press Center building, erected 1985. The striking interior feels like a time capsule, just right for the modern jazz playing from high-end speakers. Try the popular lemon jelly (6,000 KRW) with teas like oolong (10,000-11,000 KRW), white tea (11,000 KRW), or black tea (15,000 KRW). There’s also a daily special featuring black tea and shaved ice (17,000 KRW).

Isaac Toast Seoul Myeongdong

Korean toast, fried on an iron griddle, is a classic Seoul breakfast. This chain makes it easy to sample the dish. Many of the menu items feature the shop’s namesake Isaac Sauce, which adds a bit of sweetness to everything from the Ham Cheese toast (3,300 KRW) to the signature Grilled Bulgalbi toast (5,000 KRW), all at reasonable prices and just-right portions. Perfect for when you’re feeling peckish while shopping or for breakfast, since the store opens at seven in the morning.

Modern Twists on Classic Souvenirs

Yakgwa is a traditional Korean dessert. Consisting of batter fried in oil and immersed in jocheong (a Korean sweetener, similar to mizuame), yakgwa are a traditional treat eaten on holidays. Sampling the local cuisine gives you a taste of the culture. Here’s another easy recipe from a city that’s home to many UNIQLO stores.

Dakgangjeong

Dakgangjeong, Korea’s take on fried chicken, is both home cooking and streetfood. Everybody has a favorite neighborhood shop. One might even call this dish the taste of Seoul. The word has two parts: dak (chicken) and gangjeong (candy). As the name suggests, the chicken is dressed in a sweet and salty sauce, with the sugary edge provided by jocheong, a syrup made from malted grain.

Cafe Fritz’s dakgangjeong, made with a recipe from the chef at Mingles, a Michelin 3-star restaurant in Seoul, is complemented by an extensive wine list. Whether it’s marinating the chicken or frying twice to bring out extra crispiness, this dish takes time, but the mouthwatering aroma and juicy texture are well worth the wait.

Ingredients (serves 1)

Chicken thighs: 4 (skin on) 

Marinade
Salt: 1.5 Tbsp Sugar: 1 tsp Soy sauce: 0.5 tsp Water: 400ml

Sauce
Jocheong: 7 Tbsp (honey also works) Sugar: 3 Tbsp Soy sauce: 3 Tbsp  Lemon juice: 1 Tbsp  Garlic: 3 pieces 

Batter
All-purpose flour: 200g Garlic powder: 1 Tbsp, 1 tsp  Onion powder: 1 Tbsp, 1 tsp  Salt: 1 tsp 

Toppings 
Almonds: 8  Lotus root chips: 10  Black sliced olives: 10

Instructions

20 mins after marinating

Combine marinade ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Add chicken thighs. Marinate in fridge for 12 hours.
In a small pot, add jocheong, sugar, and soy sauce. Bring to boil over high heat. Once it bubbles, remove from heat and cool to room temp. Add lemon juice and garlic. Stir.
Heat oil to 170°C and combine 130g all-purpose flour, 260ml water, and seasonings in a bowl to make the batter.
Cut chicken thighs (1) into bite-size pieces and coat with batter (3). Sprinkle with the remaining 70g flour. Fry for 2.5 to 3 min. Set on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Once oil has been absorbed, fry again at 170°C and place on fresh paper towels.
Add (5) to bowl. Lightly dress with sauce (2). Plate and garnish with toppings.

Ujin, who taught us this recipe, graduated from trade school before joining Fritz. Along with supervising baking operations for the cafe’s various locations, he also writes about bread-related topics. Choi’s music and reading interests help motivate and inspire his work life.

Fritz operates a number of cafes throughout the Republic of Korea. Their seventh shop, located in the Jangchung area, is a rambling space consisting of three buildings in the middle of a courtyard of stately old trees. The dakgangjeong costs 15,000 KRW. There’s also an assortment of seasonal Korean dishes like kimchi coleslaw (4,500 KRW).

In 2014, I purchased a UNIQLO baby’s item in a blue car pattern. It was then passed down from one child to the next and now on to my sister, for her kids. Currently on its fifth baby! The oldest among them is 11 now. The youngest is seven months old.

This quality is unbelievable! Just writing to express my thanks. It’s great having the snap buttons a different color. It’s weirdly odd to find high-quality baby clothes that fit correctly. Thanks for making clothes that suit our needs. Sincerely.

I bought these pants for my husband. He’s just your average older guy, but now he looks like a young man again. The dark blue pants look so youthful and lively. My only complaint is that some aspects of the finished product are lacking. Perhaps due to the polyester material?

The other day, I purchased some mimosa flowers at the UNIQLO TOKYO store in Ginza. After my mother fell and was taken away in an ambulance, she was in poor health, really suffering. Amidst all this, I stopped by UNIQLO FLOWER and brought home some mimosas. And believe it or not, my mother’s health dramatically improved. She’s 90, so we were worried she might never get up again, but thanks to UNIQLO, things have changed.

The Asahi Shimbun recently ran my account of this story in the letters to the editor section of the paper. Since my letter involved UNIQLO’s flower business, I’ve included it here in this message. I’ve visited all kinds of florists, and you have the absolute best variety, presentation, freshness, and prices. Plus, all the staff at the Ginza store are so kind, ready to share their knowledge. I love them so much. When I pass by the flower shop, it fills me with positive feelings. My mother uses a wheelchair and lives in Saitama, so Ginza is a little bit of a trip, but I hope to visit with my mother for some more flowers soon. Thank you for the beautiful bouquets.

I had my mastectomy last year. Since this product is known for its comfort, I used it during my recovery period. After the area was healed, at first I tried several mastectomy bras. But the discomfort was such that I couldn’t even wear them for the whole day. They’re meant for mastectomy patients but I don’t know why I’m really not satisfied despite getting the very expensive ones.

I decided to go back to my UNIQLO Ultra Relax Wireless Bra, and OMG WHAT A RELIEF! I know its purpose is not for people like me but this product is my everyday savior for my daily life. I wear this at home and at work. This is my second bra but I plan to purchase more. The quality and comfort is there. I am thankful for UNIQLO and the people who designed this product. You don’t know the relief that I’m able to feel every time I go out, feeling like my best self. Thank you so much with all my heart.

After seeing the UNIQLO 40th anniversary commercial, I felt the need to share an unforgettable memory. My father died about ten years ago from cancer. Towards the end, when he was allowed to make visits back to the house, I was driving us home and decided to swing by UNIQLO. Born and raised in the country, my father was a farmer his whole life, and he had never once set foot in any kind of store to purchase clothing. This was his first time, and also my first time shopping with him. In light of the cold weather and his condition, I decided to buy us fleeces. “Here Dad,” I said, handing him a green one. “This one’s for you,” he told me, pointing out a smoky pink. He used to wear a large, but at that point a medium was fine. When he asked the cashier, “Is it okay to wear these out?” they were kind enough to remove the tags. As we both stepped out wearing our fleeces, my father said, “UNIQLO is so warm.” Two days later, back at the hospital, my father placed the fleece at his bedside and put it on whenever he woke up. The northerly winds were strong that day. As I got up to go, my father handed me the fleece. “You wear it home.”

The next day, I came back with his green fleece, which I’d washed for him, along with a beige one that he never wound up wearing. These three fleeces are treasured relics from a valuable memory between me and my father. Now I’m sick myself, just like my dad was. But whenever I watch this UNIQLO commercial, it makes me grateful I’m alive and instills me with a hope that someday, I’ll be able to go back from a small fleece to a medium. UNIQLO, thank you so much for giving my father and me these treasures. And thank you for helping me live on. I’ll never forget it.

I look forward to the flyers coming every weekend. UNIQLO offers such detailed information. Everything from items and prices to materials, new colors, photos of people wearing the items, notes on improved features, online sales, and customer feedback. For such limited space, it’s packed with information. An amazing resource. I’m always so impressed. Finding all this info online would be really difficult. Personally, I find it much easier on paper. It’s simple to compare items and explore.

I’m sure the production costs are high, but I hope you can continue the flyers, even if it’s just during the holidays. This is often why I wind up visiting the store.

Newspaper ads are in decline, but perhaps these flyers still play a role in spurring word of mouth or social media responses. Even if I don’t buy something every week, UNIQLO is always on my mind, so I check out the stores regularly. So even if the frequency changes, I hope you can continue doing flyers. I have difficulty seeing and use a white cane to get around. Usually my wife buys me everyday goods like clothes, but one day I was in a pinch, so I went shopping alone. I told the staff I needed a short sleeve polo and was led to the right place by a young lady, where another staff member came over to help me find some pants. From there, they assisted me all the way through the sale, even bagging my items.

I’ve never had such a wonderful customer experience. I was truly amazed. It makes me so grateful. I also wanted to note that the sizes on the collars are extremely easy to read. I’m used to taking photos of the tags and zooming in to see them, but I can read these tags without a problem. It’s phenomenal. Since I stopped by at half-past eight, just before closing, I was worried there would be no time to shop, but they took such amazing care of me. We were all done in fifteen minutes. I’ll be sure to tell my friends they’ll have no trouble shopping at this store.

Making it through the winter.

“In winter, the kitchen can reach -10°, so we have to put food in the fridge so it won’t freeze. In the mornings, sometimes I’ll open the front door and find a wall of snow. I didn’t get my license until moving here. It can be really frustrating driving on the snowy hills, but with so many mountains in the area like Madarao, Myoko, Togakushi, and Iizuna, my husband, who loves skiing, says he’s in heaven. The first wild vegetable of the year is fukinoto, which pokes its face out of the snow. Until we can start harvesting vegetables in June, we’ll pick away at our stockpile in the snow cellar.”

Three years ago, chef Maori Haas Murota and her family of three relocated from Paris to Nagano. Hugo, her architect husband, and Jimmy, a Swedish carpenter friend in a neighboring town, are hard at work renovating their 150-year-old home. Today, they’re getting ready to finish the walls and treat the floors with a natural insulating compound made from rice husks and lime.

“Someday, when no one lives here anymore, we want this house to naturally decompose. Right now, we’re working on the doma and the bedroom, so half the house is a construction site! The countertop in the kitchen, which is my workspace, is a desk reclaimed from a science classroom at a school. The basket we use for fetching veggies from the garden and the lanterns we use for light fixtures are all treasured gifts as well.”

The epitome of local produce

“Most of the vegetables we eat are shared with us by neighboring farms. These are bountiful harvests. For today’s lunch, I’m using tomato, satsumaimo, and eggplant we were given the other day. I usually spend around two hours in the kitchen, staring at these vegetables and choosing how to prepare them, like I’m on some kind of game show. Lots of what I make, I’m making for the first time. If it’s good, I’ll make it again and try writing up a recipe. I also write cookbooks, so my notes are filled with scribbles, almost like magic spells. Because I like to improvise, it’s hard for me to measure things out for a recipe...

How about we head out to the garden for some veggies? I had my eye on a specific mitsuba plant. There’s also basil, myoga and cherry tomatoes ready for picking. I’m realizing that I cook with different foods now, compared with when we lived in Paris. Parisians get their fruits and vegetables at the market, focusing on what’s in season, but here, I’m cooking solely with things grown in a half-kilometer radius, the epitome of local produce. The eggplants Jimmy grows are packed with seeds. We’ll eat them with soy yogurt and tomato sauce, or do a Lebanese dish using chili oil made with some of our misansho. My husband absolutely loves grilled eggplant.”

Maori is mostly vegan, while her husband Hugo maintains a vegetable-centric diet, though when they’re invited as dinner guests, they’ll gladly eat whatever’s made for them. In this day and age, relaxing one’s own rules to accommodate others is an admirable custom.

What is it you truly love?

Maori lived in Paris for 20 years. Pursuing a career in fashion, she was an assistant designer for Christophe Lemaire. She knew that she loved making things, but when she took a step back from the ever-changing world of fashion trends to ask herself what she really loved, she decided to go down the cooking path.

As a founder of the Paris architectural team Ciguë, Hugo worked on interiors for the Uniqlo U design studio in Paris. Today, he runs hugo haas studio, looking after a variety of projects in Tokyo and Paris.

“My father and mother love cooking too. I started helping them when I was little. We ate all kinds of great dishes from Japan and all over the world. For me, traveling revolves around food. Asian street food especially. I can’t get enough. Once I had built up the courage to make cooking my livelihood, my first job was catering a small show for Lemaire. After relocating to Nagano in 2023, I started writing cookbooks and making dishes using local organic produce for Vrac Market, a store run by a friend here who has helped make the move a lot easier. I was born in Tokyo and spent long stretches of time in cities like New York and Paris. This is my first time living in the countryside. I’m really feeling the effects of the environment. It’s taught me just how important community is. My husband can’t really speak Japanese, but he still helps out the old guys in the neighborhood with chopping wood. We’d imagined ourselves living a laidback existence, but each season brings its own demands, whether it’s harvesting vegetables or shoveling snow. The average age around here is 85. We want to continue this lifestyle as long as we can. Not pushing things, but working naturally, and having fun.”

Maori’s family loves to spend time at the pond near their house. Denim is the perfect material for this kind of natural living. Hugo’s denim utility jacket and baggy jeans are both from this season's collection.

My worn-out uniform

When Maori and her husband moved from Paris to Nagano, they arrived carrying two suitcases each. This meant leaving lots of things behind, but inside one of those suitcases was a pair of UNIQLO jeans she’d had for 15 years.

“When I made the shift from clothing to cooking, I also revamped my style. I was used to wearing haute couture, but then one day I passed by a UNIQLO in Paris and discovered a simple pair of jeans. I can wear them in the field. They’re full of holes. I don’t think twice about wiping off my dirty hands on them. I want my everyday clothes to be with me for the long haul, a part of daily life. The same goes for dishware and recipes. There’s nothing wrong with dishes anyone can make. I’ve had my UNIQLO mesh belt since Paris, while I picked up the denim jacket secondhand. Whether it’s clothes, dishware, or tools, I appreciate items that have a broken-in feel. A few years ago, when I decided to focus on making delicious dishes without using animal products, I resolved to build my wardrobe around pre-worn items. Maybe this has something of the Mingei aesthetic, where tears and cracks only add to the charm of a piece. I think it’s all about comfortable longevity. Not letting the rules hold you back. UNIQLO is so important to our family. It’s part of the fabric of daily life.”

Rome Woven in Light and Color

What does it mean to be Roman? Something far removed from the clichés that popular film culture has drummed into our imaginations. To understand what Rome truly is, one must forget the banalities of the so-called dolce vita and look away from the crowded guidebooks and hotspots endlessly recycled on social media. That is not the city; that is a postcard, a sugared image for outsiders. For those who are from here, the beauty of its architecture, parks, churches and history is simply part of daily life. To live in Rome is to lose yourself in the small rituals that allow you to feel its long story from another angle—the real one.

Summer in Rome is unique. Days seem endless, and the honeyed light, warm and beguiling, glances off the palazzi, returning a sandy, romantic atmosphere. It is undeniable that every corner appears like a film set— but not a Hollywood one, rather one drawn from your own memory. When at Piazza San Cosimato market, the city shows its colors first: tomatoes in quiet, sun-warmed reds, basil in cool greens, bread and pasta in pale, inviting tones. These colors naturally show up in what people wear—linen that lifts with a breeze, cotton softened by light, clothes chosen to feel at ease, but always chic. Nothing is fixed; the heat decides.

A short walk leads behind Villa Farnesina, where jasmine lingers in the air, like a quiet pleasure released from private rooms behind shuttered windows and terraces. Here, the din of the street softens into the hush of backstreets, and the cool shade of its perfumed lanes offers respite from the summer glare. Then the path opens toward the Tiber, where young couples wander under the sun, eating gelato—the emblem of an Italian summer in which time dilates in favour of a life lived in slow motion, wearing fabrics loosely, as if weightless.
