Andy Grant
Songwriter
Andy, who’s been living in Austin since spring 2015, has a studio inside an Airstream trailer that he keeps parked in the woods outside the city, where he goes to write his music. “I moved to this town because of its vibrant and supportive musical community. I’ve collaborated with so many different local musicians.” The Hi, How Are You mural above was drawn by Daniel Johnston, another artist who loved living in Austin. If you’re in the city, this mural is worth a special trip.

Jasmine Franklin & Mac Benson
Barista, Student
East Austin, known for its indie businesses, is home to Palomino Coffee, a hub of the community. Jasmine and Mac, who has a fabulous short hairstyle, both help run the coffee shop and study at UT Austin, which counts director Wes Anderson among its alumni. “This place has city, nature, food, music, and a bunch of really great people. My favourite spots are the secluded spaces you can find along the Barton Creek Greenbelt. On a sunny day you can grab your favourite book and sit by the water and relax.” Mac highly recommends Spend Time, a zine mart specializing in independent and small press zines.

Kathleen Carmichael
Cafe Owner
“I was born and raised in Austin,” says Kathleen, a friend of Andy (above) and owner of Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors. The boardwalk along Lady Bird Lake, where Kathleen stands, offers a classic view of the Austin skyline. In the background of the photo above is the Paramount Theatre, which was built in 1915 and serves as one of the venues for the South by Southwest festival, held every year in March as a showcase for music, film and the latest technology.

Peter & Sanetra Longno
Director & Photographer, Producer
Married couple Peter and Sanetra are both part of the local film industry. “I’m making a photography project that documents the connection between mothers and their children,” says Sanetra. The couple is pictured here in two spots on the extension of Congress Avenue, which begins at the Texas Capitol visible in the background of the photo on the right page. Head south from the capitol’s downtown location and cross over the bridge, and the street becomes South Congress. The stark shift from big city skyscrapers to low-slung urban architecture is yet another of Austin’s many charms. “My wife and I like to ride our bicycles through the surrounding neighbourhoods. It’s the best way to explore the city and a great way to scout locations for projects,” Peter says.

Will Bryant & Family
Artist
Will lives with his wife Sally, their six-year-old daughter Polly, and their two-year-old son James in Austin, where he also keeps the studio where he makes his art. “People here tend to be down to earth. There’s also plenty to complain about, since the city is experiencing rapid growth, but the people that truly make this place interesting are really good quality humans. Our neighbour let us borrow a generator during the winter storm. Local rapper Kydd Jones brought us a meal. I’ve been lucky enough to work with Kydd on album art and merch for one of his singles.” Good neighbours like these are one of the big reasons why this city is so liveable.
