Our commitment to reducing plastic
We’ve already begun fabricating our in-store shopping bags from eco-friendly FSC or recycled paper and have introduced a charge for each one used by customers to encourage you to bring your own multi-use bags instead. Find out more about what we do with this money here. By the end of this year, we’re aiming to implement this practice in every one of our stores across Europe. If you're looking for a high-quality and reliable multi-use bag, we recommend picking up one of our lightweight Eco Bags, made from BCI-approved* cotton which helps limit the use of excess water, pesticides and chemicals while improving the working environments of the farmers who grow it.
We’re also working towards reducing the amount of plastic in our packaging, product displays and in-store materials like hangers, hooks and plastic ties. This is to ensure we reach our target of reducing single-use plastic by 85% by the end of 2020 and replacing all single-use paper with environmentally friendly materials by the end of 2022. Together, this will save 7,800 tonnes of disposable plastic each year.
By eliminating waste and minimising our environmental footprint, UNIQLO is working to build a truly sustainable business.
*We’ve partnered with the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI*) to improve cotton farming globally. By 2025, all of our cotton will be procured from sustainable sources. To learn more about UNIQLO and BCI, click here.
