Meet the UTme T-shirt designs from the four contest winners under the theme of Muay Thai art featuring famous boxers such as Buakaw Banchamek.
UTme Thai Boxing Design Contest is a design contest project under the UTme collection by bringing the art of Muay Thai, one of the strong cultures of the country, to be elevated to be more well-known internationally and to support Thai youth who are interested in design and art to have the opportunity to showcase their work through the UTme collection.
This project is under the collaboration between Uniqlo (Thailand), Tourism Authority of Thailand and Central Pattana Public Company Limited. It also has qualified persons such as Assistant Professor Dr. Dujhathai Wongkapan, a lecturer from the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University and Thai artist Mr. Arak Onwilai or Sahred Toy as consultants for the project who provide advice to the 4 winners.

Because I am a person who likes to read books, I have picked up a posture that refers to the Ramayana literature, which is the Aira's trunk-breaking posture, to use in the design. In addition, the overall design uses graphic and two-dimensional lines to make it modern and more accessible to the general public. The elements are sharp shapes that convey strength and fighting, and lotus flowers that convey the use of intelligence because Muay Thai is a martial art that requires balance and does not only use physical strength.

The highlight of this design is the use of female boxer characters because in the past, Muay Thai was often seen as a sport popular with men. The artist used the female boxer character to inspire that Muay Thai is a sport for all ages. In addition, bright colors in warm tones were chosen to convey strength and victory.

The design was inspired by the Yantra tattoo which some boxers like to get because they believe it will bring them safety. The top has been modified to look like a glove to represent Muay Thai. The background is the word Muay Thai with the names of various Muay Thai moves below. The artist chose to use pastel tones and contrasting color pairs to make the overall look easy to access, making it a design that can be worn on many occasions.

The theme for the 2023 contest is “HOPE AWAY FROM HOME”
This contest sheds light on the power of inclusion; for people to be part of the communities where they have found refugee. To be welcomed and accepted into the new community is an essential element for them to find hope, and to rebuild their lives. Meeting new friends, having a place to learn, reuniting with family, and finding work. We called for for drawings and artworks that represent and support the inclusion of refugees in society.
