Joyful Summer Picnic
UNIQLO and Marimekko are pleased to announce the new limited-edition collection just in time for the joyful summer sun. The new collection offers a wide array of breezy, comfortable dresses, T-shirts and skirts made in cotton and linen, along with hats, shoes, and bags to mix and match. This collection features Marimekko’s world-renowned prints: Melooni (melon), Ruukku (flower pot) by Maija Isola, Lirinä (sound of gurgling water), Asema (station) by Pentti Rinta, along with Demeter by Katsuji Wakisaka and Galleria (gallery) by Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi. These vibrant and colorful patterns, full of the feeling of summer fun, are available for women, kids, and babies.
Print designer biographies
The 2024 Summer UNIQLO and Marimekko Limited-Edition Collection is a celebration of unforgettable and sunny summer picnics spent in nature with friends and family. The lineup features iconic Marimekko patterns by Maija Isola, Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, Pentti Rinta and Katsuji Wakisaka.
Maija Isola
Maija Isola's (1927–2001) career as a fabric designer began in 1949. During her time at Marimekko, she designed more than 500 patterns for the design house. Maija Isola laid the foundation for Marimekko as a print house with her joyful and abstract creations.
Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi
Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi worked at Marimekko from 1953 to 1960. With her architectural, clean-lined clothes, she revolutionized the perception of clothing in the 1950s. Her functional, seasonal designs created timeless clothes such as the Jokapoika shirt (1956), Marimekko's longest continuously produced garment. Nurmesniemi also designed prints for Marimekko.
Pentti Rinta
Pentti Rinta joined Marimekko in 1969 as a fashion designer designing bold and colourful Marimekko prints until 1987. In the 1970s, Pentti’s Marimekko pieces appeared on the pages of fashion publications and magazines around the world.
Katsuji Wakisaka
Japanese designer Katsuji Wakisaka created print patterns for Marimekko from 1968 to 1976 and again in 2001. Katsuji’s designs are characterized by a free and playful approach to pattern composition and a vivid and exuberant color palette.
