New York City is a playground and constant source of inspiration for artist Jason Polan. As an illustrator and writer, he takes curiosity in observing people, their quirky behaviors, and created environments. He turns these observations into artworks with a documentary approach that takes him out exploring the city everyday. At any given time, Jason can be found with pen and paper, out in his familiar stomping grounds: drawing the crowds on a street corner in SoHo, at his favorite post office in TriBeCa, by a Central Park hotdog stand or a NoLita art supply store, grabbing a slice in the West Village - you name it, he’ s been there, scribbling away. That’ s how, slowly but surely, Jason has been cataloging the entire city through his ambitious project to draw ‘ Every Person in New York.’

Not surprisingly, this unique approach has turned him into a bit of a NYC celebrity, garnering the attention of fans and press alike. Tapped recently by the New York Times, he was commissioned to create daily illustrations capturing everyday life in the city. To celebrate the prolific artist, and the tees he designed for Uniqlo’ s SPRZ collection, we asked Jason for an illustrated interview. We spoke about daily routines, his happy place on Canal, and even got a sneak peek into his “studio.” The results following are drawings and words exclusively created for Today’ s Pick Up.
