Cressida, tell us about your background and how you found your passion and career in embroidery design?

embroidery designer Cressida Jamieson

I have been embroidering all my life, starting when I was seven years old when my mother taught me how to cross-stitch. It was the beginning of a real love of mine, and throughout school, university and when I worked as a fashion PR and later a florist, I would always sew in my spare time. It was only seven years ago that I finally decided to make my life-long passion into a career. I feel very lucky that I get to embroider all day every day and to create completely new pieces of art every time I pick up a needle and thread.

Tell us more about your creative process when developing your custom-made designs?
I will take my time looking for inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. I like to keep an open mind at the design stage, never knowing where I will end up! Inspiration often comes from embroideries of the past - I love how they all tell a story and capture a moment in time. I also look at art, film, books, flowers in my garden, graffiti on the street, song lyrics, anything that captures my attention goes into the mix!

Do you have a favourite embroidery project you can tell us about?
I don’t have a single favourite project, but I always love embroidery which has a hidden meaning or an interesting backstory. Sometimes it can be a very simple embroidery but it symbolises something which only the client will know to look at it. Or it can be the item itself; I am often given items to embroider which have been passed down through generations and it is an honour to be adding to its history.

Do you think that personalising your favourite shirt or mending a hole in your jumper contributes to you cherishing the piece more by keeping it in use longer?

Definitely! You are making the item completely unique to you by adding to it, and also giving it a new lease of life at the same time. To forever cherish!
