Make a world of difference with MADE51

Nov 28, 2023 LifeWear
Shop the new Christmas ornaments collection to stand with refugees and help build brighter futures
This holiday season UNIQLO is honoured to once again offer MADE51 products in our flagship stores to support refugees. MADE51 is a global brand created by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, which connects refugee artisans with local social enterprises to design, make, and market home décor and accessories across the world. The brand has been established to help refugees achieve economic independence by making use of their valuable skills, traditions, and heritage as part of a sustainable value chain.

Customers will find the handmade Christmas ornaments in selected UNIQLO flagship stores across Europe: at our Paris Opéra, London Regent Street, Stockholm Kungsträdgården, and Copenhagen Strøget stores while stock lasts. The proceeds from MADE51 sales will be donated to UNHCR to further support MADE51 and their work to connect refugee artisans with international markets.

In addition to being hand-crafted by refugees, each MADE51 product reveals something about the history and culture of the artisans that make the products. UNIQLO is proud to celebrate the talent and potential of refugee artisans and bring these beautiful products and their rich stories to UNIQLO customers.

MADE51 is active in 23 countries, working in partnership with 35 local social enterprises that engage directly with refugee artisan groups. MADE51 takes each of these partners through an ethical compliance assessment led by the World Fair Trade Organisation to ensure their operations meet Fair Trade standards. At present, MADE51 is working with around 3700 artisans, over 85% of whom are women. Behind every MADE51 product is someone who has been forced to flee their home because of war, violence or persecution. Someone who is resilient, determined, and hopeful for a brighter future.

Desert Moon Ornament

These delightful ornaments highlight the impressive heritage techniques of the Tuareg. For these nomadic pastoralists who traditionally inhabit a vast area in the Sahara Desert in tents, the moon is a symbol of protection and prosperity. In the Tuareg culture, artisans belong to a hereditary caste which includes blacksmiths, leatherworkers, and jewellers. Available at our Paris Opéra, London Regent Street, Stockholm Kungsträdgården, and Copenhagen Strøget stores while stock lasts, for 14€ / £12.

Crafted by Malian refugees living in Niger

Eternal Snowflake Ornament

This detailed crochet snowflake is emblematic of the winter peaks and mountain passages that define the landscape of Afghanistan. For Afghans, the snowflake is a reminder of home. Available at our Paris Opéra, London Regent Street, Stockholm Kungsträdgården, and Copenhagen Strøget stores while stock lasts, for 14 € / £12.

Crafted by Afghan refugees living in India.

Star of Unity Ornament

This intricate beadwork is an homage to the star on the national flag of South Sudan, which symbolises unity and, for the artisans, the hope to see peace in their homeland. Available at our Paris Opéra and London Regent Street stores while stock lasts, for 14€ / £12.

Crafted by Sudanese refugees living in Egypt.

Charming Songbird Ornament

This little bird is made from handwoven textiles by Karenni women. The women spin threads, dye them, and weave them into fine fabrics using traditional backstrap looms. Available at our Stockholm Kungsträdgården and Copenhagen Strøget stores while stock lasts, for 14€ / £12.

Crafted by refugees from Myanmar living in Thailand.
