Asha and Hayley rejoiced in this chance encounter at the Bronx Zoo. They exchanged contact details and promised to meet again.

“Hayley said she wanted to work with me and I’m so happy that she remembered…she wants to use her editing expertise and manage artists. I thought I’d show her the clothes I designed and we can go from there.”

“Sounds great. If you can focus on designing and Hayley helps to spread the word, there’s nothing better than that. What a blessing that is.”

Asha nodded, “Yes, such a blessing.”

Even if time passes, people have a strange way of pulling each other closer, like magnets.
When one feels that, it’s high time to start something new.

“By the way, Jack rang me up out of the blue the other day saying there’s a big assignment he wants me to help him out with. Just like what just happened to you, it’s nice to have someone you haven’t talked to in a while recall you like this. It’s super how I have this chance to see Jack again.”

I was truly ecstatic that I can work with Jack after a long while. For me, Jack was who I feel this magnetic connection with.

A few days later, Jack and I met up at this traditional coffee stand in the East Village. For the last few years, Jack was not in NY but in Portland, working as a book hunter.

“Long time no see and you’re looking really well. Gosh, everything in this city feels chaotic. People walk too fast. No matter how much you walk, people just keeping passing you.”

Jack was born and bred in NY but he’s completely gotten used to the relaxed lifestyle in Portland.

“Actually, I have this assignment from this traditional book store in Portland. They want to dedicate a section of the store to rare books, our expertise. The storeowner asked me to handle the selection, stocking, and design the space. I happily accepted but I couldn’t find a good partner I wanted to work with because I don’t want to just collect old expensive books. I want to make selections I can be proud of. That’s when I thought of you. What do you think?”

Jack broke off a quarter of the donut, popped it in his mouth, and took a sip of the coffee. Jack and his style were intact.

“By the way, you’re still in those traditional fashion. Seersucker shirts. When I was small, I loved seersucker shirts, I wore them all the time during the summer,” said Jack.

“Jack, you don’t remember? This was the shirt you gave me, from the clothes you left at the apartment.”

“Oh really? Thought I recognize it. Right, so you’re still holding on to my clothes, good to know. In fact, I was running low on a change of clothes. Would you spare some?”

Jack took a good hard look at the seersucker shirt I had on and nodded, “Really nice shirt.” “Button-downs look good in NY,” he continued.

Cool joy of summer

This is the perfect dry seersucker shirt for those casual summer styles. This year, the update is in the fabric itself. We’ve reduced the bumps that directly touch the skin for a wonderfully clean touch and a soft, light, and refreshing wear.

Plus the DRY technology to dry off, even if you perspire. Nice that it dries fast after a wash, too. There is a wide variety of traditional patterns from checks to stripes. This LifeWear will sure to expand your styles this summer.

Jack’s Dream

The so-called American Classic or the traditional fashion style is something I learned from Jack.

“Right, so what you do is casually loosen those nice clean styles. A crisp ironed shirt, worn like a jacket, unbuttoned, with a t-shirt and shorts. And make sure to roll up the sleeves…”

“Whatever the style, pay extra attention to the shoes. Because the shoes reveal how that person lives. It’s like the hubcaps to a car. When they’re sparkle, you can tell that the owner looks after the car well, whatever the make. But if they’re all scratched up and have oil grubs, it just doesn’t look nice, regardless of the make. Same thing. So, shoes are important.”

“You should definitely roll up casual pants, just enough to reveal a bit of the ankles. I even roll up shorts. So, it’s best to choose a size larger for your trousers.”

This is how I learned about putting together an American Classic style from Jack.

“So, what do you think? Do you want to come to Portland for a bit for work? There’s plenty of place to live so don’t worry about that, just like a month. Bring Asha and Nico.”

“Today, many creatives and artists from L.A. and San Francisco are relocating to Portland. The rent is cheap and you get bigger spaces so it’s easier to live. I think you’ll like it.”

Jack asked my entire family to come to Portland.

“This is just my idea for now but rather than making it a rare book section of the store, I want to design it like a living room at home. The classic style with a wall full of bookshelves, with big sofas where you can sit back and enjoy fine coffees and teas and the books. We can charge $10 an hour to spend time there and we can deduct that $10 from those who buy the book…”

Jack was trying to realize such a bookstore he had dreamed about with this assignment.

“That sounds amazing! So, it’s not just about selling books but the time and experience to enjoy that comfortable space. Even if you can’t buy the book, you can enjoy the hospitality of the staff as you learn about the book selections or take the time to dive into the rare books. What that is a paradise for those who love books.”

“Exactly. I want to create this enrichening time you can’t order online. I really want you to be my partner. I don’t think I can pull this off without you.”

Jack popped in another piece of the donut, gulped down the coffee, put his hands around my shoulder and said, “Love the feel of seersucker.”

There were twinkles in Jack’s eyes.

The Daily Summerwear

The silhouette is a relax fit with a spice of trendiness. We’re proud that the size balance is just right that it doesn’t choose those who wear it. Style it with shorts as a relaxed look for the summer or go casual by matching it with linen trousers, rolled up.

The small collar design for this button-down makes it a great piece for those cool biz fashions. Wonderful gift choice for your family anniversaries and Father’s Day. No iron after a wash so you can throw it over to coolly enjoy the hot season. Definitely a must-have for your daily wardrove for summer.

It’s casual but sharp.
The summer seersucker
I want to wear every day.

What is “LifeWear story 100?”

At UNIQLO,
there exist these lines of clothes
which has remained for many years,
trend-neutral
yet never dated.
Out of the line-ups,
they are the unsung presence,
sitting quietly behind in TV ads.

Yet, they are the culmination
of the years of passion and devotion,
where UNIQLO sought to pursue
more comfort,
more durability, and
more quality.

They give shape and gravitas
to what and who UNIQLO is,
and what UNIQLO continues
to nurture with great care.

To go beyond yesterday,
to reach higher tomorrow.

When you take it in your hands,
when you try it on,
it softly speaks to you,
almost like a friend.

What is a rich quality
lifestyle?
How is such a quality day spent?
What does happiness mean to you…

And you will find yourself
surprised to discover that such
piece of clothing has existed.

What is the UNIQLO principle?
Why do we call clothing LifeWear?
What kind of clothes constitute
LifeWear?

Here, we go deep into
the root of LifeWear,
to know
and to tell.
And I hope to write
stories that revolve
around LifeWear and myself.

LifeWear story 100 will be
a story about a journey with me and LifeWear.
