Pajama, my love

Three months had passed since Asha and I started going out.

“I dreamed of myself wearing a Japanese kimono…”

One morning, Asha said as she curled up under the white sheets on the bed like a cat.

“Have you ever worn one?”

“Never, but there I was, wearing a kimono like any old thing. Had the obi and everything. While others around were wearing the usual clothes, I was the only one in it. Very interesting dream.”

The dazzling ray of the morning sun was creating a lovely design on the curtain that swayed with the breeze.

“Hey, what did the Japanese traditionally wear to go to sleep? A kimono?”

Asha asked as she fiddled around with the edge of the curtain from the bed.

“In the olden days, they would wear a yukata, kimono made of this thin cotton fabric. With a formal kimono, you have an inner layer called juban, but with a yukata, you wear it directly over your skin. It was originally what you wore in the house after bath, but now people wear one to go outside during the summer.”

“I know yukata! I’ve seen it in a photo. So, a yukata is a pajama for the Japanese. And you wear nothing underneath. That sounds really comfy,” she said almost excitedly.

“But today, I doubt many wear one to go to sleep.”

“I love pajamas. I think it’s the fashion for going to sleep, very exciting. Just when you are about to hit the pillow, the pajama has that divine texture and wear. It’s the most comfortable clothes ever. I can understand why the Japanese would go out with a yukata. I want to go out in my pajamas!”

“But I guess you won’t find anyone doing that!”

“Exactly!” and we started rolling over, laughing.

“But it would be nice to see a pajama you can go out in. Like a stylish ensemble, you know, like the clothes to travel through a world of dreams…”

On that note, she picked up the notebook next to her bed and happily started jotting down her ideas.

“Clothes to sleep in, what a lovely thought.”

She said and once again curled up in bed with a big pillow.

The bliss of a relaxing time

These are the perfect pajamas for your relaxing time during the winter. Made of soft 100% cotton flannel that offers comfort and a raised nap surface.

We are proud of shape — it’s not constricting when you sleep, but keeps its clean silhouette intact. From this season, the collar changed from an open collar to a closed collar, a result of much deliberation. To let you in on a secret, we finally decided to go with a design that would keep you warm around the neck.

Matching PJs

“Nightgowns are adorable for the ladies, but I prefer the good ol’ PJs. What about you?” she asked with a devilish twinkle in her eyes.

“If it’s in the bed, then nightgowns aren’t bad, but I prefer pajamas. Nightgowns are, as the word, a dress for the night so…”

“Oh you are so honest,” said Asha and started jiggling about on the bed with laughter.

“Hey, why don’t we go get pajamas? My dream is to sleep in matching PJs with my boyfriend. Ok, please?”

“We only wear them when we go to sleep together, deal?”

I was flattered but embarrassed, so I was at a loss for words.

“You don’t like the idea?”

“It’s fine.”
“That’s vague. So, which is it?”

“Tell me yes or no. You need to be clear about this,” she said sounding upset.

“I’m not knocking it, so yes. I was just slightly embarrassed.”

“Why should you get embarrassed about something between us? I like you. You like me. And we’re just having a private conversation! C’mon,” she said with a frown and turned her back towards me in the bed.

“Do you like checked, stripes, or plain, Asha? I prefer the checked design.”

I said and Asha immediately turned around and said, “Me, too!”

“We should have collars! And definitely flannel for the coming season. Slightly baggy because it’s relaxed and the bagginess is adorable. And there should be piping around the edges…”

She went on and on about the details of the pajama she likes and finally said, “I want to go get pajamas!”

Like Asha said, pajamas are clothes that treasure that bit of happiness, to enjoy a peaceful sleep. And how fantastically wonderful it is to wear a matching one with the one you love.

“Ok, let’s get up,” I said.

“No, let’s stay here a bit more and talk,” she said.

I brought her closer to me and gave a peck on her forehead.

A new suggestion for pajamas

This season, we went all out on the smallest of details, so they can be worn not just for lounging about but as part of your mix-and-match wardrobe.

First off, the button hole. The very top is positioned horizontally and the second, vertically. We’ve also raised the position of the top button slightly higher so that you can use it as a shirt. The drawstring of the waist lets you wear this as a relaxed pair of pants. You can coordinate the top with a pair of jeans or chinos and bring in a knitted top or sweatshirt for the pants.

What is “LifeWear story 100?”

At UNIQLO,
there exist these lines of clothes
which has remained for many years,
trend-neutral
yet never dated.
Out of the line-ups,
they are the unsung presence,
sitting quietly behind in TV ads.

Yet, they are the culmination
of the years of passion and devotion,
where UNIQLO sought to pursue
more comfort,
more durability, and
more quality.

They give shape and gravitas
to what and who UNIQLO is,
and what UNIQLO continues
to nurture with great care.

To go beyond yesterday,
to reach higher tomorrow.

When you take it in your hands,
when you try it on,
it softly speaks to you,
almost like a friend.

What is a rich quality
lifestyle?
How is such a quality day spent?
What does happiness mean to you…

And you will find yourself
surprised to discover that such
piece of clothing has existed.

What is the UNIQLO principle?
Why do we call clothing LifeWear?
What kind of clothes constitute
LifeWear?

Here, we go deep into
the root of LifeWear,
to know
and to tell.
And I hope to write
stories that revolve
around LifeWear and myself.

LifeWear story 100 will be
a story about a journey with me and LifeWear.
