A place where music, art, and fashion intersect

How did such big names as Billie Eilish and Takashi Murakami end up collaborating? It began with “Doraemon UT,” a collection created by Murakami released in Spring/Summer 2018. This UT line featured T-shirts with art exhibited by Murakami the previous year at THE DORAEMON EXHIBITION TOKYO 2017. Murakami’s characteristic floral motifs, and collages with the main characters Doraemon and other characters, covered the blue portions of Doraemon’s head and body. The artistic representation of such an iconic national character caused a stir in Japan that reverberated around the world. Based on this collaboration, we knew that we wanted to work with Murakami again one day. Just at that moment, Murakami produced a music video for a female artist.

The music video for “you should see me in a crown” is a fully animated production created by Takashi Murakami based on ideas by Billie Eilish, showcasing the interplay of their sense and talent.

The young artist Billie Eilish had a dominating presence and beautiful voice. She had already received global attention, but few at the time could have foreseen her becoming the youngest person ever to win five Grammy Awards, including the four main categories. Having been exposed to that remarkable talent, it was clear that UT should do the new collaboration with Murakami. The project would be to expresses the creativity of Billie and Murakami through the medium of UT T-shirts. Spanning the boundaries of music, art, and fashion, we wanted to bring leading-edge cross culture to as many people as possible.

A beautiful fusion of the iconic logo and flowers

This collection presents a wide range of designs, including incorporating colors and motifs to express the men’s, women’s, and kids T-shirts lines. The one common element, however, is the graphic that cleverly combines the symbolic BILLIE EILISH logo and the “Blohsh” icon with Murakami’s floral and mushroom motifs. The women’s line includes a design with a sketch on the front of the character created in Murakami’s music video. Billie’s representative neon green plays a superb role as an accent color. The mashup of the unique worldviews of these two artists on the UT platform has generated the special value of wearable art. The Billie Elish collection also presents designs with details carefully chosen by Billie herself, such as the placement and color. The unisex caps and hat are also items not to be missed.

A variety of promotions are also planned to mark the launch of these collaboration items. One is a three-meter tall statue of Billie wearing the UT collection, created by Murakami especially for this collection, which will be displayed in the UNIQLO Harajuku store opening in June. This rare artwork will be on view for a limited time. A special website highlighting the collection should also not be missed. Visitors can enjoy a video of the collection, and select their favorite items while experiencing a worldview that combines the talents of Billie and Murakami.
This latest UT collection arose from a desire for people to experience new culture through T-shirts. Experience the creative power of these two artists through tees.
