UTGP Winning designs announcement from around the world!
The collection will be available on 2/26/2021
For the 15th UTGP, UNIQLO worked with MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art) in New York City and invited prominent artists, with work in MoMA’s collection, to be contest judges: Lawrence Weiner, Paula Scher and Sarah Morris. Participants designed T-shirts based on the theme “DRAW YOUR WORLD.”
UNIQLO and MoMA invited these three prominent artists,
who have work in MoMA's collection, to design a T-shirt as part of the UTGP2020 collection.
Since the 1960s, Lawrence Weiner has made art that explores materials and their relationships to people. He makes his work using language along with lots of different signs and symbols. He makes it this way because he believes that when people see his work, they can think about their own picture of it because everybody has different experiences with things.
Paula Scher is a graphic designer and painter. She has been a principal in the New York office of Pentagram since 1991, where she has designed identity and branding systems, environmental graphics, packaging and publications for a wide range of clients. Her large-scale paintings of maps reinterpret society’s approach to data and our visual representation of the trafficked environment.
Sarah Morris is known for her complex abstractions both in film and painting and is one of the most intriguing artists of her generation. Morris’s paintings explore the codes and power structures of architecture and cultural symbols. Color and form are central to the work and remain resolutely social. Strategies of communication remain at the heart of Morris’s work. She is interested in ‘the most simplified, coded way to have a conversation with the viewer.’
The UT GRAND PRIX (UTGP) is a design competition that started in 2005 that uses the T-shirt as a creative medium and invites everyone to freely express creativity. For the 15th UTGP, UNIQLO worked with MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art) in New York City and invited prominent artists, with work in MoMA’s collection, to be contest judges: Lawrence Weiner, Paula Scher and Sarah Morris.
