Wagashi are traditional Japanese confections loved by many people. Through collaborations with longestablished confection houses, UNIQLO launched a series based on Wagashi motifs. Kudos to: Kimuraya Sohonten, the inventor of “anpan” or bread with redbean filling; Habutae Dango, known for dumplings which have been mentioned in a lot of Japanese literature; Bunmeido instrumental in making Castella (Castilla) a household name across Japan; Mamegen, which, over many decades, has uncovered different shades of flavors in snacks made from beans, peas and nuts; Tokiwado Kaminari-Okoshi Honpo, which produces Kaminari Okoshi or sweet, crispy crackers made of puffed rice; and Eitaro Sohonpo headquartered in Tokyo’s Nihonbashi District. Enjoy our collection, which captures some of the iconic motifs, patterns and lettering of the confection houses in simple design.
Since the foundation in 1865, we have pursued the taste of bean confectionery with the manufacturing process that preserves the flavor and taste of beans. The first Surugaya Genbei was nicknamed "Genbei-san of bean shop", and it seems he would carry roasted beans on his shoulder or a cart stand, and he was very popular with the Edo downtown people.
