This Earth Month, Give Unwanted Clothing a Second Life on Your Moving Day Through RE.UNIQLO

Through a partnership with Piece of Cake Moving & Storage, the largest moving company in NYC, and SuperCircle, a textile recycling enabler, UNIQLO US launched UNtrash It for Earth Month, a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to help movers responsibly part ways with unwanted clothing.

In April, all Piece of Cake movers in NY received UNtrash It bags to donate and recycle their unwanted clothing on moving day through the RE.UNIQLO program.

Najah Ayoub, COO of Piece of Cake Moving & Storage, highlighted how the program encourages mindful packing: “Before a customer starts packing, we encourage them to take a moment to edit their closet: if they haven’t worn something in a year, it’s probably time to donate or sell it. The UNtrash It partnership with UNIQLO and SuperCircle makes it even easier to get rid of clothes, while giving them a second life and ensuring they don’t end up in a landfill.”

Of the approximate 9,000 eligible moves in April, 15% participated in this program, collecting 7,432 pounds (or 2 truckloads of textiles) for recycling or donation to people experiencing homelessness. This is 4X UNIQLO US’ average monthly collection through RE.UNIQLO.

On Earth Day, a special activation was held at UNIQLO Soho’s Flagship Store in NYC to celebrate the partnership, where customers could spin the garapon wheel and win different prizes, including free repairs and embroidery at local RE.UNIQLO Studios to extend the life of their clothing. Customers could also pick up pre-paid labels to ship their clothing to the RE.UNIQLO program.

This partnership was a service from UNIQLO to NYC during Earth Month and a way to bring RE.UNIQLO to many more New Yorkers. “UNtrash It provided us with a great opportunity to not only highlight our RE.UNIQLO program, which we offer in all our stores, but also to make it easier than ever for consumers to responsibly dispose of their unwanted clothing during a stressful life event.”, said Jean-Emmanuel Shein, Global Director of Sustainability.

The initiative received extensive local and national print, online, and television coverage.
