On May 4th, UNIQLO and the Manhattan School for Career Development (751M) recognized the recipient of the UNIQLO FAST FORWARD Scholarship.
The ceremony was held at the school’s auditorium in New York City. UNIQLO USA CEO Daisuke Tsukagoshi was joined by the school’s principal, Ewa Asterita, the Superintendent of District 75, Ketler Louissaint, and the Commissioner at the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, Martha Jackson, to celebrate the student recipient, Arber Gjokaj.
“I believe it is never too late to succeed and this scholarship will help me with college and my future,” said Arber.
“Manhattan School for Career Development is immensely grateful to UNIQLO for its generosity in providing this amazing scholarship and training program to our students,” said Ewa Asterita, Principal at Manhattan School for Career Development. “These initiatives are tangible evidence of UNIQLO’s commitment to provide equitable access to students with disabilities. We are greatly honored to partner with UNIQLO in this noble endeavor.”
UNIQLO FAST FORWARD Scholarship
In March 2022, students from 751M who have been admitted to a 2 or 4-year college or university had the opportunity to apply for the scholarship, followed by interviews with a selection committee made up of representatives from UNIQLO, 751M, and the NYC DOE’s District 75. The scholarship, facilitated through the Fund for Public Schools and developed to support a student who has a clear vision for the future, passion for their chosen course of study, and intention to serve their communities, will go into effect in September 2022. The recipient, Arber Gjokaj, said, “I believe it is never too late to succeed and this scholarship will help me with college and my future.”
UNIQLO Retail Training Program
In addition to the scholarship, UNIQLO began offering a retail training program for 751M students on April 6th that will run through June 3rd. The program combines both classroom and in-store learning with the goal of providing students with a well-rounded understanding of the skills and mindset needed for a career in retail business.
The program is taught by UNIQLO employees with cooperation of 751M teachers, and focuses on the following areas of retail operations: customer service, loss prevention, visual merchandising, money management, teambuilding skills, inventory management, and sales planning. Every week running from trainees attend a one-hour classroom session at 751M and a 2-3 hour store session at the UNIQLO SoHo Global Flagship Store.
UNIQLO and District 75
The UNIQLO FAST FORWARD Scholarship and retail training program are the latest initiatives in UNIQLO’s ongoing support of District 75 in partnership with the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities in New York City. In October of 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, UNIQLO donated 25,000 AIRism masks to the District 75 community, helping to protect students with disabilities, their families and caretakers, and teachers and faculty throughout Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.
