Elaina Bellis dresses to fit her busy life.
Art director, model, and mom to identical twins, Elaina Bellis has a simple trick for feeling polished in a snap: Don’t succumb to athleisure! “Since having the girls, I’ve been staying home more, but I get dressed every day as opposed to staying in my workout clothes or wearing sweatpants,” she says. “Choosing an outfit each morning helps me feel like myself and beautiful.” That doesn’t mean going for fussy or complicated clothes—Bellis turns to easy basics like linen button-downs, flowy dresses, and lightweight layering pieces to take her seamlessly through the day. As for her 14-month-old daughters Quincy Kay and Rowe James, they’re usually in ruffled tees and soft onesies. They’re already the stars of Bellis’s Instagram feed (@laylaygibson), which is a sunny, optimistic, and honest portrayal of her life in Los Angeles. With more than 30,000 followers, she shares everything from a day on the beach with her husband and twins, to her frustrations with breastfeeding.
Just in time for Mother’s Day—and only two months after her daughters’ first birthday!—Bellis talked to Vogue about self-care and exercise, her favorite places in L.A., and the high-functioning AIRism pieces from Uniqlo (seamless coverage! Quick-dry technology! The softest fabrics!) that make up her laid-back, on-the-go wardrobe.

On Prioritizing Motherhood
A typical day for me is at home with my girls, and I like to feel good, so I’ll throw on high-rise pants and a playful top or a dress. Since having Quincy and Rowe, I’ve only taken on a handful of jobs—I decided that it was best for me to focus on the girls for their first couple of years. I do take freelance art direction and modeling jobs here and there if they’re the right fit for me!
All About a Clean Palette
I like clothing that is effortlessly beautiful and feels good on my skin. I need to be able to move around a lot and feel comfortable doing so on the job and with my girls. I love “tomboy” style, and anything Jane Birkin–inspired. This white cotton boatneck top and matching skirt feel very French countryside to me. I wear a lot of white—I love styling it head to toe, and layering Uniqlo’s AIRism bra camisoles underneath. They’re the best with light colors and sheer tops because they just disappear.
Making Time for Mom
I’m pretty active—I go to barre at the Dailey Method in Venice or yoga classes three to four times a week, when my schedule allows. I like to hike, too. I wasn’t able to start working out again until we got the girls on a nap schedule, which was when they were about seven months old. Before that, I would just go on really long walks with them because I didn’t know when they were going to sleep, and they only slept in their stroller. For working out, I really like these AIRism pieces, which are also great for layering—they’re so light, it’s like wearing air! (Hint: The camisoles and tees are perfect under deep-V dresses for a little more coverage!)
I also love to cook and like to find new, healthful ingredients to replace processed ones to make comfort food that’s actually good for you. I love to shop at flea markets and find “buried treasures” for our home—we’re moving to a bigger house in east L.A. in a month!—and I’m always up for any kind of outdoor adventure.
Uniqlo Basics and “Funky” Extras
I think basics are what Uniqlo does best, like their linen tops, jeans, and layering pieces—the classics. They do staples really well. I shop for my daughters at Uniqlo, too, but I let my husband do his own shopping—he’s a better shopper than me!
I am the queen of the laid-back look. I’m all about no fuss. I wear clothes that I know will work for my body type, and I’m a huge fan of vintage jeans, wide-leg trousers, jumpers, and boho dresses. To change it up for a meeting or a night out, I just throw on a pair on funky shoes, a cool jacket, and some red lipstick! I’m all about “less is more.”
