We took on the challenge of reproducing the warmth of down without the feathers to create PUFFTECH: high-performance insulation from synthetic fibers. Working with Toray Industries, UNIQLO spent about 10 years developing PUFFTECH, which mimics the structure of down in its ability to trap air to achieve unprecedented levels of lightness and warmth. Air, the secret to warmth.
How do we achieve the lightness and warmth of down, without the feathers? After 10 years of joint development with Toray Industries, we created PUFFTECH– high-performance insulation made from ultra-fine fibers. Each fiber is hollow and has a spring-like 3D shape, trapping air and warmth.

Moisture-resistant warmth.
When down jackets get wet, they can lose volume and warmth and take a long time to dry. PUFFTECH is resistant to moisture absorption, so it can maintain sufficient warmth even in environments with humidity of 90% or more. Thanks to its 3D structure, PUFFTECH easily returns to its original volume, even when wet.
Lotus leaves, the secret to water-repellent technology.
Thanks to Toray’s NANODESIGN™ technology, our PUFFTECH jackets are also water-repellent. To create this quality, fibers are bundled and heat-processed to create a state in which the threads contract and coil. Weaving fabric from these threads creates an irregular surface similar to that of a lotus leaf–which creates a layer of air between water droplets and the fabric, making the droplets roll off more easily. The upper thread that’s used on the outer layer is also water-repellent, providing additional functionality and protection.

Washable kids' clothing for winter.
Making outerwear for children meant we worked with Toray to create lightweight insulation that holds plenty of warm air, while also being easy to care for. We also made sure the zip was easy to use while wearing gloves, and added a chin guard and a name tag.
