SOCIAL INNOVATION
At UNIQLO, we believe every piece of clothing has a story worth extending.
Through RE.UNIQLO STUDIO repair and remake services in our stores, we encourage customers around the world to extend the lifespan of their garments. Even small stitches can make a big difference. To mark International Repair Day this year, UNIQLO stores worldwide hosted creative workshops helping customers add a new chapter to their favorite clothes, with each workshop reflecting local traditions and approaches to sustainability. Read on to learn how UNIQLO celebrated the art of repair around the world this year.
Korea: Hands-on weaving activities with the community
In Korea, UNIQLO celebrated International Repair Day by hosting a series of intimate, hands-on workshops in Seoul, Daegu, and Busan throughout October. Each two-hour session invited customers to learn the technique of repairing holes or worn areas in fabric by weaving new thread into the damaged section, under the guidance of a professional instructor from the local repair community. To encourage continued repair, every attendee also received a sewing kit and a UNIQLO reusable bag, empowering them to put their new skills to use at home.
Malaysia: Practical skills workshops for everyday life
On November 2, UNIQLO in Malaysia brought together customers and staff at the Damansara Avenue roadside store for a Repair Workshop that celebrated both sustainability and lifelong learning. The event, held with local partner Sewing World, featured two engaging sessions where participants learned basic yet essential repair skills such as sewing buttons and mending small tears and holes.
Customers appreciated the approachable, hands-on nature of the event, with one participant expressing pride in being able to fix clothes instead of discarding them. Another customer highlighted the importance of repair as a life skill that helps reduce waste.
Singapore: Creativity meets heritage
UNIQLO in Singapore embraced International Repair Day with two events. Firstly, in early October, the team partnered with Vintage Wknd for the Jeans Festival, transforming leftover denim scraps from in-store alteration services into stylish, upcycled keychains. Customers could redeem these unique heart- and star-shaped keychains by purchasing a pair of jeans, and many shared how meaningful it was to see sustainability integrated into fashion in such a practical way.
Secondly, in mid-October, the RE.UNIQLO STUDIO in the UNIQLO Orchard Central Global Flagship Store became a hub for craftsmanship through the Masterpiece REMAKE Series. In collaboration with Masahiko Morikawa, founder of Studio Masachuka, UNIQLO hosted interactive workshops and consultations that introduced to customers how they can remake their beloved garments using rescued heritage fabrics such as batik and kimono.
Japan: Tradition revived through Sashiko
UNIQLO in Japan hosted special workshops at Abeno Q’s Mall in Osaka and Tokyu Department Store Sapporo in Hokkaido, introducing customers to Sashiko (a traditional Japanese embroidery technique). Originally developed as a practical method for reinforcing and repairing worn clothing, Sashiko uses small, even stitches to create geometric patterns across fabric. Over time, this utilitarian craft has evolved into a decorative art form, celebrated for its beauty and symbolism.
At the workshops, customers brought their favorite UNIQLO garments, whether cherished pieces they wanted to keep wearing, or items in need of repair, and learned the basics of Sashiko. The workshops highlighted how small actions can make a big difference in extending the life of clothing and reducing waste. One participant shared, “I’ve always been interested in embroidery myself, so this was a wonderful experience. Adding Sashiko patterns to my favorite shirt completely changed its look. I can’t wait to wear it again.”
Europe: Gifts of craft and connection
On October 18, UNIQLO invited customers across Europe to experience the art of repair and customization at RE.UNIQLO STUDIO locations. As a gesture of appreciation, every visitor who requested a repair received a thoughtful gift to continue their sustainability journey at home. This included a UNIQLO Repair Kit, providing essential tools to keep garments looking their best, and a handcrafted Sashiko bag charm, created in collaboration with Studio Masachuka.
