Max Serrano-Wu
Track & field
Unwinding in a blue colour block fleece that complements his sharp features, Max is a track and field captain who competes as a sprinter. A student of stem cell biology, he spent a gap year during the pandemic working at a Cambridge-based biotech company. “All the students come here to eat. I probably swing by at least once a month,” he says of Pinocchio’s Pizza & Subs, a beloved local pizza joint. Slices start at $4.05, priced to fit a student budget. Don’t miss the legendary buffalo chicken.

Lightweight rowing
Harvard’s lightweight rowing team practices on the Charles River, flowing through Cambridge from Boston. The colourful utility parkas that they each wear almost like a uniform bring out their different personalities while fostering a sporting atmosphere. Holding his jacket is Jake, a recent graduate, while junior Harrison wears orange and sophomore Brahm wears navy. In the words of Greg, the team captain, “Lots of races up until this year were cancelled due to the pandemic, but this gave us all a chance to realise just how precious our time in college, and on the water, really is.”

Grace Allen
Volleyball
An attacker on the volleyball team, Grace is currently a junior at Harvard. Her academic focus is human evolutionary biology. “I’m interested in studying the big picture of our species. Not so much the chemical aspects, but more like where we came from and why, and what effect we have around the world,” says Grace. “I’m also a big fan of theatre and do some acting as well.” Equally comfortable in a flannel shirt or a traditional sweater vest, Grace exemplifies the lifestyle of the scholar-athlete.

When we visited Cambridge for this feature, Harvard University was in the midst of graduation. The streets were full of people there to attend the magnificent proceedings. Crowds flocked to the Harvard Coop, just outside campus, to purchase branded sweatshirts and other sportswear.
To get to know a place, it’s best to use your feet. And what better place to start than Newbury Street, a mile-long promenade of clothing stores, including UNIQLO, just ten minutes away by car, across the Charles River from Cambridge. Here, the younger crowd favours comfortable, casual sportswear options like hoodies with leggings or shorts. Dressed in these classic, sporty styles, they grab food in one of the fun cafés or enjoy shopping. Sportswear is a natural counterpoint to the historical cityscape of brick buildings. In the handful of days we spent in Boston, we encountered this atmosphere wherever we went.

Everywhere we turned, we saw a real-life application of the notion of Sport Utility Wear. Each of the student athletes that we interviewed looked right at home in these sporty styles.
In the 1960s, the legendary Japanese fashion tome Take Ivy immortalised Ivy league style; demonstrating how sportswear could be a seamless part of everyday style. Here in Cambridge, a modern version of that style endures. Over fifty years since its publication, daily life has changed in countless ways. Yet one thing that hasn’t changed in all this time: the vivacious style so fundamental to the sports traditions that are such a deeply rooted part of life in these two cities.
