There’s a reason we love items with a sense of heritage. These two jackets were inspired by vintage workwear pieces from the US. Designs that have lasted through the ages have been updated for today’s styles, letting modern tastes shine through. On the left is a breezy silhouette with a compact cut. The jacket on the right has a plaid lining and an easygoing spirit. Both have bodies made from durable canvas, while the collars and the inside of the sleeves feature corduroy that holds in warmth. This pairing of strong and gentle fabrics makes them adaptable to a broad range of styles. An oversized fit, as shown, makes for a relaxed presentation, while a more tailored fit would accentuate the volume of the bottoms. Keeping step with the times, these enduring designs help to draw out your personality.

This season marks the launch of two short blousons with retro looks. Each has a unique matte texture unattainable with woven fabrics and an airy lightness. The black blouson has an oversized design with a corded waist that can be cinched to create a cocoon silhouette. The brick-coloured jacket has a button closure and a collar. Worn here by Chloe Slater, an energetic singer and songwriter based in Manchester, which has been known for producing myriad international musical artists over the years. With a wistful sound vaguely reminiscent of the 1990s, her energetic vocal stylings give voice to the struggles and vexations of young people today, faced with the state of the world. With a relaxed fit, this unisex coat is made from lightweight cotton nylon. The hood can be stashed away, while a belted waist allows for different silhouettes. The other coat is from UNIQLO : C. While retaining a classic Chesterfield design, this single-button semi double-breasted coat has a modern silhouette. London-based musician SAHRA styled both coats for us effortlessly. Chocolate Brown
Black and milk bring out chocolate’s richness.
Black style model image
Elegance in Simplicity

This season’s feature colour is a luxurious chocolatey brown. The key to mastering this trending tone is combining it with black. The result is a poignant interplay not easily achieved with other palettes. The mid length coat, made with PUFFERTECH, has the feel of a light jacket but with plenty of warmth. The rest of the ensemble is black. This expressive low gauge high neck jumper and pleated heavy-ounce denim trousers may be close to the same colour, combining the different tones and textures gives the outfit depth. A minimalist and refined look perfect for this autumn and winter.

Café au Lait Colours

This brown and white look was inspired by café au lait, coffee with milk. It starts with a white cotton shirt and crisp white denim. Tossing on a classic brown double-breasted jacket pulls the whole outfit together. The deep brown evokes the warmth and relaxation of hot coffee, while the white gives the outfit brightness, like the sweet flavour of milk. Make sure neither the shirt or denim is completely white, so you can play with nuance. The classic brown jacket and the slight gradation of whites give the outfit a pleasant sense of contrast. The harmony between the brown and white is simple yet beautiful.

Colours of Cashmere with Omar Sosa

Colours of Cashmere with Omar Sosa

Each year, UNIQLO releases cashmere jumpers in a wealth of colours. This year, we’re introducing men’s and women’s jumpers in a total of thirty tones, which sent our thoughts to the creative director Omar Sosa. Back when he worked at apartamento magazine, he often wore jumpers in bright colours. “I prefer loose and simple pullovers to button-ups,” says Omar, who true to form styles this cashmere jumper like a sweatshirt. “I have lots of cashmere jumpers from UNIQLO, some over ten years old. I like the classic look and the comfort they provide in cold weather. I wear a lot of classic items. Clothes with substance that withstand the test of time, uninfluenced by trends. Not to sound contrarian, but I like adding something to the mix that shakes things up a bit. I’m a fan of bold poppy colours and sometimes wear bright whites. But there are plenty of people who feel resistance toward wearing colours or having colourful things. You can see this all too clearly in how they decorate their spaces, or in the omnipresent outfits of dark tones. But I see colour as a form of self-expression, a way of saying things about yourself that words can’t always convey. One of my dreams is to choose the colour palette for a line of cashmere jumpers from UNIQLO. I’m jealous of the women’s line, they have all these classic colours.”

apartamento magazine

photo of books

A publishing house and interiors magazine launched in Barcelona in 2008 by Omar Sosa, Nacho Alegre and Marco Velardi. Features creatives and artists all over the world with a focus on their living spaces and lifestyles. Collaborated with LifeWear in 2023. Though Omar is no longer part of the magazine, it continues to be published twice a year.

'I think I read someplace that the word "Soufflé" means "puff" in French, which is a perfect way to describe this material. This is my first time wearing Soufflé knits, but the white jumper feels just like wearing a cloud. I also love that it is ribbed', says Swedish artist Hanna Peterson, sharing her thoughts on a Soufflé yarn jumper.
Developed by UNIQLO and set to become a knitwear classic, this yarn is soft without the scratchiness of other knits. As a side note, Hanna first connected with LifeWear magazine one year ago in 2024, when she was asked to make the cover for Issue 11, Timeless Tones. A self-described 'materials nerd', she shared some ideas for what makes an ideal jumper.
'It’s important to have a trendy yet timeless fit and for it to be made from materials that last. With that in mind, this blue jumper has a boxy fit, almost cropped, and a perfect silhouette. I could wear this all year round, in all kinds of different outfits.'

Art of Hanna Peterson

Speaking to her work’s approach to portraiture, Hanna says she’s 'inspired by the fashion world and the human body. Discovering someone on the street or in a photo in an interesting pose is a perfect basis for a painting'.

Hanna Peterson
Artist

Born in Dalarna in central Sweden. Now based in Gothenburg. Along with painting, she creates tufted works by threading yarn through cloth. Posters of Hanna’s work can be purchased through the online art poster shops The Poster Club, curated in Copenhagen, and Wall of Art, based in Stockholm. Currently preparing for an upcoming exhibition of prints, Hanna is a fan of UNIQLO’s striped pyjamas made from cotton poplin fabric, which resembles the same aesthetic as many pieces in her paintings.

1. Playing with Necklines

Neckties give jacket outfits class and character. Jon complemented his Oxford shirt with a vintage tie from his collection. “I go for ties with subdued colours and unique patterns,” says Jon. New Yorkers know how to play around with necklines.

detail photo 01
2. Perfect Fit

Jon chose a brushed jersey jacket with a comfortable fit. “Comfort is my top priority,” he says, calling the regular fit “ideal” for its sharp look and the space around the waist.

3. Calm Tones

“I’m into relaxed and subtle tones,” says Jon, opting for a pair of straight chinos in robust twill. Attentive to material and silhouette, he favoured this dark brown pair for their “enduring charm.”

1. Versatile Design

Ricky sports a knit jacket made from sleek and comfy wool. “I’m into sort of oversized designs,” he says, adding that this jacket can be casual or elegant as needed. A versatile choice for those on the go. Ricky says it’s “perfect for travel.”

2. Over the Shoulders

For times when a jacket feels a little stuffy, Ricky proposes “dressing it down with a jumper tied over the shoulders.” A great tip for quickly changing the look of an ensemble.

detail photo 02
3. Colour Harmony

Ricky builds his outfits around neutral colours, adding subtle tones and a bit of colour for contrast. To offset the pink shirt underneath the jacket, he wears straight off-white chinos. Leave it to a Parisian to strike the perfect balance between chic and bold.

4. Roll Up the Hem

Since he bikes around the city, Ricky makes sure his trousers won’t get caught in the chain. That’s why he says he “rolls the cuffs up, even when the fit’s a little baggy.” Because he used to do ballet, he says “it’s fun to show the ankles.”

Ricky Van Gils
Freelance Stylist and Consultant

After studying ballet, Ricky moved into fashion. Following work as an assistant to a series of famous stylists, he went off on his own in 2022 and is now based in Paris, where he works as a freelance stylist and consultant, collaborating with a number of famous brands.

Product Design Studio

This team’s name derives from ’95 (“Kuo” in Korean), the year both founders were born. The chair above, part of their VINO series, is a design that strives not only for an elegant form, but easy daily use in any space. Hwachan (right) lived in Japan when he was younger, giving him the chance to watch UNIQLO grow with his own eyes. When asked about the merino jumper, he noted the texture. “This is good material. Polyester bunches up, making it hard to wear under a jacket, but this is nice and thin, easy to wear in different outfits.” Yoomin (left), who has sensitive skin, commented on her jumper being “so soft and thin; you could wear it straight from autumn and winter into early summer.” Merino wool is known for its superlative thinness. Simple enough to wear as a daily uniform, perhaps it has something in common with this duo’s versatile designs.

Product Design Studio

When creating products, design studio “be formative” favours materials that have an innate sense of warmth without announcing their presence too strongly in a space. The Semonan Chair, made from plywood and hand-painted green, has a design that’s both simple and sharp. Yejin (right) sums up UNIQLO as having “quality that doesn’t wash away.” To her point, one of merino wool’s great traits is a special treatment that prevents pilling and allows it to be washed at home. Like the studio’s products, merino gains character over time. Kiyong (left), a fan of UNIQLO fleece, says he likes clothes that are “warm and light, just like this jumper. It’s so comfortable.”

Ease of motion and comfortable fit are central to the design. Topping off the 2.5 layer construction is a water-repellent*1 twill. Beneath that is a film that gives the fabric wind and water resistance and breathability. The lining has a textured finish that won’t stick against the skin. Front zip has a water-blocking*2 fastener, which is enclosed all the way to the chin for extra comfort, while the shoulders have a 3D cut for mobility. Just because this is a classic doesn’t mean it can’t play with colours. The exact shade of navy is occasionally adjusted to match the mood of the times.

*1 Surface is treated with water-repellent material for long-term protection. Finish will not last forever.
*2 Not entirely waterproof. Fastener designed to block water.

Helmet Bag

“Helmet bags” came into being in the 1950s, when US Air Force helmets made the monumental shift from leather to metal. The subsequent addition of attachments and accessories caused the bags to grow bigger and bigger. The original bags lacked the shoulder strap seen here, so they had to be carried by the handles. While the classy sage green colour and padded fabric hew close to tradition, the various interior pockets and suitcase belt on the back panel update the functionality.

Riding Jacket

Country sports are still a part of British life. These traditions gave rise to a kind of jacket built for pursuits like riding and hunting that’s made from an iconic waxed fabric. Blocking wind and rain, this material has become as well known as the coat itself. Our jacket is an update on the classic, making it more useful for the city.

image of Jacket

The corduroy collar is soft against the skin when popped to block the wind, while the big front pockets, originally for holding gloves or game, are joined by handwarmers accessed separately. The material is rugged cotton nylon, while the PUFFERTECH insulation, our latest functional fill, holds in the warmth.

What are the origins of skiwear? There are a lot of theories, but what we do know is that Nordic people have been getting around on skis since before the Christian era. The shift from transport to sports occurred in Norway in the 1860s. Sondre Norheim, known as the father of modern skiing, made a huge impact by formalising ski turns and developing the hardware used for bindings. Until the middle of the twentieth century, skiwear focused on functionality, the norm being jumpers, socks and trousers made of wool in unisex styles. This all changed in the 1960s. Synthetic textiles like nylon were introduced, replacing natural fibres. Thanks to pop-cultural moments like the release of Downhill Racer starring Robert Redford, skiing became a people’s sport. Ski fashion blossomed over the decades. The 1970s brought a seismic shift in textiles, in the form of waterproof and moisture-wicking fabrics and fleece, while the 1980s gave us vivid colours and the snowsuit. In the 2000s, slopeside styles took on an even greater variety. As performance materials continued to evolve, looser fits became available, thanks to the influence of snowboarding and streetwear, along with different kinds of shells and down jackets, as well as throwback looks.

This season, we’ve developed new items in tandem with Team Sweden, with whom UNIQLO is Main Partner as well as Official Clothing Partner at the next Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. One such item is the BLOCKTECH parka worn by mogul skier Albin Holmgren, pictured to the right. Sporting a three-layer construction and a special membrane for greater water-repellancy and breathability, this comfy coat is just right for winter leisure or daily wear. Alpine skier Ebba Årsjö wears the new PUFFERTECH vest, staying toasty in a retro look reminiscent of 1970s resort style.

The shift from natural fibres to synthetics, and their improved functionality, were driving forces behind trends. Even after all these years, there’s something romantic about seeing a veteran skier coming down the slopes decked out in the old-fashioned styles.

Jerry Ukai & Rocca
Artist, Art Director and Daughter

Along with working as an illustrator and art director, in recent years Jerry has been exhibiting his artwork at shows in Japan. He also writes stories about hiking. His daughter Rocca has started to learn bouldering. On the weekends, she and her father go on mountain outings in the Yatsugatake area.

Over thirty years since it debuted, the UNIQLO fleece jacket has become a standard, carefully updated over time. It all began with a desire to share this practical and functional item with the world, transforming it from outdoor clothing into an affordable choice for everyday wear. Another vital aspect of the fleece that’s been with us from the start is the variety of colours. Along with chic and understated tones, this season’s lineup includes over ten options like yellow, retro green, purple, and colourblock.

The Family Canteen

The Family Canteen (1974)

This union of the outdoors and fun colours is a perfect chance to highlight the work of Umetaro Azechi, who some call the 'Printmaker of the Peaks'. From the 1920s until his passing in 1999, Azechi made prints with the mountains as his subject. Garnering acclaim for works depicting mountain men set in majestic landscapes that also served as canvases for his personal experiences in nature, he became known from the 1970s, towards the end of his career, for his use of pop colours. For this shoot, we asked mountain-lover and artist Jerry Ukai and his daughter to style green and yellow fleeces inspired by the colours of The Family Canteen, an Azechi print from 1974. Jerry says he’s been getting into trail running and creative work that’s focused on the outdoors. 'Lots of my mountain pals are big fans of Azechi’s work', says Jerry, pictured alongside his daughter at the cabin in the foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains that he’s turned into a studio. Pop colours suit the mountains well.

Maximising comfort endlessly expands an item’s possibilities. EZY jeans are the ultimate example. It’s all because of Ultra Stretch, you’d never imagine from the way they look. The secret is a twill fabric like denim on the outside but with a pile texture on the inside like sweats. A clear choice not just for everyday wear, but for a variety of situations like relaxing on an international flight. But how about exercise? Diego, who tried bouldering for us in EZY jeans, says he was amazed at how quickly his legs moved up the wall, 'stretching unlike any jeans I’ve ever worn'. The scene evokes images from the legendary photo book Yosemite in the Sixties, which captured climbers in Yosemite National Park during that decade. Since tools and special gear were hard to come by in those days, the climbers are depicted clinging to the cliffs in jeans. Today, denim’s range has extended to include just this kind of activity. The seamless construction gives it the mark of today.

Outdoor Style
Tips

In the 1970s, outdoor style took the world by storm. In those days, camping and hiking weren't merely a hobby, they were a way of life. Items from this period formed the basis of today's outdoor fashions, now styled many different ways. The importance of layers has been recognised anew, while functional fashion items have become a matter of course. Cotton and nylon, the old outdoor standards, have given way to lightweight functional materials with superior breathability and water-repellency. Over the years, both clothes and gear evolved, from heavy to light. Colours have changed from the bold schemes of the 1970s to the tonal outfits of today, which work on the mountain or in town. Meanwhile, some items like fleece jackets or functional backpacks have become beloved standards, transcending the eras. These changes go beyond fashion trends; they speak to changing lifestyles. The outdoors aren’t just an experience, they’re part of everyday life, just as they’re part of fashion.

1970s
Outdoor Style of 1970's

1. These backpacks had lots of pockets and tonnes of room. Designed for the outdoors, where durability and weight were primary concerns.

2. Clothes were functional, favouring bold styles that stood out from the landscape. Shirts had long sleeves and boxy silhouettes, while trousers were designed for ease of movement.

3. Shoes were made to take a beating. High-cut hiking boots were standard, along with heavyweight trekking shoes.

2025
Outdoor Style of 2025

1. Lightweight backpacks with increased functionality. Compartments and subdivided pockets switch things up, allowing for digital devices to be stowed in transit.

2. Technological innovations have made clothing lighter and more functional. The windproof parka pictured to the left not only blocks the wind, it’s breathable and treated to fend off gentle showers.

3. Footwear has come a long way. Lightweight trail running shoes are a popular choice, offering waterproof comfort.

Colour Socks 49kr
Ballet Shoes 499kr (UNIQLO : C)

Japanese has fifty sounds, while the US has fifty states. Lots of things come in fifty varieties. Sometimes it’s great to have a selection of fifty colours, like with coloured pencils or nail polish. As far as clothes go, socks are probably the one case where this holds true. For over twenty years, UNIQLO has been offering these ribbed socks in fifty colours, updated here and there. Having a choice is key. Though some colours may look bright on their own, they blend in nicely once you’re wearing them, much like glasses. A few of the tones are similar, though each adds something special to an outfit, and best of all, they cost only €3.90 a pair. The palette is set to change again for 2026 Spring & Summer. Stock up on your favourites today. It never hurts to have new socks around. If you find a colour that works for you, why not go for it?

Jeans have their roots in workwear. Now there’s an entire world of jeans, ranging from slim to wide, but the straight leg jeans designed in collaboration with JW ANDERSON this fall are just right. Not too narrow or too wide, they hang perfectly straight. Simplicity offered in a choice of colours. Women’s features four kinds of indigo blue, plus olive green. The men’s collection, new this season, has three different tones of indigo, along with a charcoal grey reminiscent of vintage black denim and a classic brown close to brick red. Wearing the right size and length ensures a superior fit. The neat ankles show just a bit of your socks.

Who was it that said that trouser styles speak to the nature of an era?
Female models wearing Flare Silhouette

Flare Silhouette

Flared silhouettes evoke nostalgia for the 1970s while also bringing something new to fashion. Flaring from above the knee, the trouser jeans on the left have a centre crease that highlights their beautiful form, while the stretchy fabric makes them easy to wear all day. The smart trousers on the right flare from a higher point, giving the legs a graceful silhouette. The four-way stretch is enough to put a smile on your face.

Curved silhouettes fit just right from the waist down to the hips, then gently curve out and down to the ankles. This denim pair is garment dyed and features a classic five-pocket design. The pair in the middle is the roomiest of the bunch, curving out from the thighs down to high ankles. The pair on the right has a unique barrel shape, starting out from the hips to the knees before narrowing towards the cuffs. Made from a cotton jersey blend for added comfort.

What is the True Proof of Great Clothing?

When it comes to having fun with style, the easy way out is to rely on creative, extravagant, flamboyant pieces and let them do the talking. But true style lies elsewhere. It’s about wearing simple garments — and playing with them, with precision, personality, even originality. You are the star; the clothes are just tools.

For men, the Oxford shirt is essential in this regard. Rugged and thick, oh-so-classic and preppy, it’s so familiar that it now tolerates every kind of misbehaviour. Worn open over a colourful tee or directly on the skin, neatly tucked under a V-neck jumper or thrown wild under a hoodie, true to size or oversized, tied around the waist or draped over the shoulders, rumpled or crisp, button-down collar or ripped off — anything goes.

In the same spirit, the pleated skirt plays a similar role for women. Utterly classic and unmistakably bourgeois, it can be twisted, lengthened, or shortened. It goes with scuffed sneakers or brand-new shoes, with crisp blouses or casual tees, heirloom jewelry or youthful trinkets. It can look prim or rebellious, formal or informal, traditional or modern. It does whatever you want. Because that’s how you recognise truly great clothing.

Find Clothes that Suit You

To have style, there’s no formula. But there are ingredients—always the same—reappearing from one silhouette to the next, from one person to another. To have style, culture helps. So does self-confidence, of course. Even humour can make a difference. But above all, comfort and ease are essential. Without them, style is simply impossible.

That’s why it’s crucial to find your allies: authentic clothes that you can wear without fear or effort. For women, cashmere jumpers are essential in this regard. Because they’re soft, comfortable, flexible, and versatile. Because they can be worn directly on the skin or layered over a T-shirt. Under a heavy coat or a light jacket. On a freezing winter day or a cool summer evening. Crew neck or turtleneck, understated or bold, brand new or well-worn—the cashmere jumper is never a challenge, and always a pleasure.

For men, chinos serve the same purpose. Soft and comfortable, authentic and grounded, reassuring and reliable—they welcome both relaxation and stylistic flair. They pair with a blazer or a bomber, a T-shirt or a button-down, sneakers or loafers, on a good day or a rough one, under the sun or clouds. The chino is delightfully simple. That’s why it’s a garment of style.

Revisiting Classic Through Kissas

Old style mid-century Japanese cafes are called kissaten (or kissa) and they’re scattered all over the country and I love ’em. They each have an impossibly cool feel, a sense of authority, of 'earned excellence'. This — excellence over time — is the definition of 'classic'. And from classic, so flows nostalgia. One of my favourite kissas is a little shop called Būgen, just south of Tokyo. Būgen’s interior is all thick beams and earthen walls. The tables are made of heavy, well-worn wood. The chairs, too — heavy. Everything has weight, is constructed to last.

Most kissas serve similar food: toast, pizza toast, 'Napolitan' spaghetti. Būgen’s thick-sliced pizza toast is scored in its own special way to induce more crisp in the crust, more easily handled bites. Kissa are often helmed by a husband and wife team who have been behind the counter for the majority of their lives. This creates a consistency, and from that consistency flows the patronage of regulars. Folks arrive each morning as they have for decades, and order their 'morning set'. Like this, through consistency, kissas become tentpoles of community. This community aspect of kissas cannot be faked, is critical to their cool, is what gives them their earned excellence and classic stature.

That’s me in the photo there, sitting in Būgen, wearing UNIQLO’s new lambswool jumper. It’s a nice jumper. I enjoyed wearing it while eating some perfectly made pizza toast. Clothing made of high-quality raw materials, cut in a comfortable way, will age with you in the same way you can age with a good kissa. You put the jumper on or walk into the shop, you feel that tinge of nostalgia, that sense of excellence over time.
