Machi Ito is a fashion editor whose love of UNIQLO grew so much she issued a book that featured the techniques to use when styling the brand’s items last year. She recommends that grownups should limit UNIQLO items to less than half of the look, but in this popular series, she presents the items and the styling techniques that she’d use if she had to go all UNIQLO. The sixth in this series showcases the best items for transitioning from summer to fall in style.
“It may be summer still, but new season items have already begun to line store shelves. I’ve made it a personal rule to immediately get the items that I think are hot so that I can avoid the heartbreak of discovering the item is sold out when I want it and having let it slip away. The first UNIQLO item that I bought this season is this new pleated skirt.”
“The skirt accordion pleats have a classy appearance because their creases are sharp. Its fabric is also more substantial than those of the chiffon pleated skirts that are popular in summer and those of the scrunched washer pleated skirts, so the skirt produces an upscale feel even when it’s matched to a thin tee and sandals. I also dearly love how the pleats’ narrow folds prevent excessive flaring to produce a slender appearance even when I wear a long cardigan or other outerwear.”
“The skirt comes in five, mostly basic, colors, but the model that I recommend the most is the one with the checked pattern. The model has a patterned style, but it’s still easy to coordinate because it has a gray base. The way that the pattern’s yellow lines quietly make a statement is adorable as well. The new season is truly the time of year to spread a pattern over a large area and produce a gorgeous look because plain colors inevitably dominate and coats always conceal your best styling efforts! I should also mention a quality that the skirt boasts: It’s washable at home. The skirt is on-trend, easy to coordinate, and easy to care for, so there’s no reason not to buy it!”

“The EZY Ankle Pants are my personal favorites, although they have been improved and renamed as Smart Ankle Pants. I’ve always loved green, like I said in volume three, but this grayish green is slightly more elegant than mint and isn’t as breezy, so it’s ideal for grownups. I love that the color is easy to coordinate with the darker colors that come to dominate the new season. The pants are extremely comfortable because they stretch lengthwise and sideways. You can also wash them easily at home because they resist wrinkling. Their center creases ensure a respectable appearance, so you’ll still get fantastic results when you deliberately match tees and other casual items.”

“Nowadays makeup and earrings are hard to style, with masks becoming an essential everyday wear. Because of this, I’m increasingly drawn to intricately designed tops that will brighten my face. A collar or billowy sleeves alone produce adorable looks, but the item that I heartily recommend is this bow tie blouse, which has a long ribbon at the neck line.”
“Like checked patterns, bow tie blouses are on trend this season. They go great with plaid. Above all, their feminine feel is exceptional. Change the way that you knot the bow tie for more styling options with considerably different feels. For example, if the bottom is a skirt, then keep the knot simple and let the tie cascade. When wearing pants, use a ribbon knot and produce a slightly sweeter look.”
“The fabric is light georgette. It’s smooth to the touch, so you can wear the blouse directly over your skin. You can also wear a sweater or a cardigan over top when it starts getting chilly. The blouse comes in four colors: classic black, off-white, beige, and dark brown. All are colors that are easy to coordinate all year. You might want to consider getting a differently colored item as addition to your collection.”
