Styling Tips for Sophisticated Monochrome Looks: Brown
Monochrome coordinates look undeniably elegant. If you want to try them but think they’re difficult to pull off, then we’ve got you covered. We’ve invited professionals to share tips and techniques that you can’t go wrong with. Let’s start by mastering brown, one of this season’s hottest colors!
1. Freely mix browns and beiges
Start with LIGHT COLORS
“When putting together monochrome coordinates, start by deciding what the central item is going to be. If you start with a light-colored item, coordination becomes easier. It’s just a matter of adding dark-colored items. While a variety of tones, like brown, coffee, camel, and beige, are available this year, don’t feel obliged to coordinate everything in the same tone. Just think light and dark. The secret is to create contrast.”

2. SKIRTS MADE OF BREEZY FABRICS are
great for monochrome winter looks!
“Heavy-looking and feeling fabrics dominate fall and winter looks. If you mix in a fabric with a breezy feel, like that of this pleated skirt, then you’ll get a look with well-defined contrast even when you coordinate the entirety in the same color. This skirt goes well with knitwear and coats, so you’ll want this skirt for more than just monochrome coordinates. It’s a great item for calling attention to this year’s look as well.”

3. Vary the FABRICS’ FEEL
to produce a striking appearance
“When putting together a stylish monochrome look, you’ll want to concentrate more on the fabrics’ texture than on the overall color arrangement. Combine different fabrics. For example, this turtleneck sweater is cashmere, which has a fluffy, brushed feel. The cardigan layered over top is moderately thick lambswool. The pants are corduroy. This combination produces a classy, rhythmical look. The coordinate has plenty of personality even if the entirety is in the same color, so it’s more gorgeous as well!”

4. NUANCED BEIGE instantly brings a
classy feel to monochrome coordinates
“This down jacket’s exquisite beige has an earth-tone feel. Just the inclusion of an item with such a nuanced color instantly adds depth to monochrome looks and fosters a much more stylish appearance. Down jackets can appear too casual, yet a classy, sophisticated appearance is still yours when you coordinate them to clean-look skirts.”

5. Add CASUAL ITEMS when using brown,
which is surprisingly difficult to coordinate
“Brown is in vogue, but it’s actually quite difficult to expertly coordinate. The trick to avoiding an old-fashioned feel is to add casual items, like a hoodie and a checked shirt, to the mix. Their addition instantly brings a fresh perspective. Remember to add a feminine feel and a contemporary touch through a tight skirt.”
