Sophisticated, Clean Looks
Work-ready outfits
It’s surprisingly difficult to put together work looks that make a good impression and have a clean feel to them. That being the case, popular stylist Sayaka Kawakami joins us to share tips on sophisticated work attire. She’s the perfect teacher, too, because having worked at an office she’s well versed in company dress codes as well as the conventions governing work attire. You’ll love her coordination ideas, each crafted with a specific occasion in mind, and her compelling explanations.
“This dress looks clean in a grownup way, owing to its delicate sheen and long length. It should make a good impression at seminars that are attended by a variety of age groups. For added respectability, wear a jacket over top. If you’re looking to wear a jacket yet retain the dress’ soft feel, then choose a color that’s similar to the dress for the jacket.”

Made of a crisp fabric, this shirt produces a picture of respectability that’s appropriate for an office. Consider a larger size that offers plenty of give. The oversized silhouette alone has today’s look, so just pulling on this shirt confers a fashionable appearance. The shirt remains comfortable when you work as well because it’s not tight around the shoulders or arms. A fresh and exciting look is yours when you match a dark purple cardigan to trad, plaid pants.”

“Clean and respectable white and beige are perfect colors for the office. One of the joys of fall is the growing variety of available fabrics, so use different fabrics to layer the colors. For example, white corduroy, white cotton, and a flowing, light beige fabric. The smart layering of fabrics brings a luxurious element to the corduroy dress, which appears casual at first glance.”

“It’s important to lean on the clothing’s color and design in settings requiring a gorgeous look, such as parties. Great results are yours when you choose light colors over dark and dressy designs, like those with gathers and pleats, over simple ones. The colors are misty overall, so prevent the look from becoming too cutesy by coordinating a blouse that’s made of a crisp fabric and balancing out the sweetness.”

“Ensembles of similar items are convenient because they allow for quick and easy coordinates even when you’re short on time. However, there are times when a slightly showier look is desired, like special events. At such times, choose the same color but different fabrics. A fabric that’s handy is one that has a gloss like this skirt’s. You’re sure to get an ideal amount of contrast.”

“Seated meetings are frequent when working at an office, so attention is inevitably drawn toward the speakers’ faces. That’s why you’ll appreciate a blouse that’s made of a drape fabric and has voluminous sleeves. Pair the blouse to a sharp, tight skirt to complete this classic office coordinate, which I recommend. The item is easy to care for as well because it resists wrinkling and can be laundered at home. You’ll love the blouse’s practicality, too. It can be tucked in or left out, and it doesn’t catch when worn under a jacket.”
