In the world of Ukiyo-e, countless depictions of mysterious beings known as yokai have appeared throughout history. Feared for their supernatural powers that seemed to transcend human understanding, they also possessed a sense of humor and familiarity that captivated the people of Edo. Ukiyo-e artists of the time were likewise drawn to the enigmatic charm of these creatures, leaving behind many iconic masterpieces inspired by their presence.
This collection, Ukiyo-e Black, created in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's renowned Ukiyo-e collection, focuses on the unique aesthetic sensibility expressed through yokai motifs, brought to life with subtle gradations of black ink and delicate use of color. Featuring a bold interpretation of The Ruined Palace at Sōma by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, this design showcases the overwhelming presence of the famous giant skeleton across the entire T-shirt. Styled with purple-toned shorts and sneakers, the look creates a cool, coordinated palette that allows the T-shirt’s striking artwork to take center stage.

Inspired by Yakeyama Pass in the Taiheiki, a work created by Utagawa Yoshitsuya in 1861, this design features a dynamic serpent motif placed on the chest pocket, creating a striking accent despite its compact scale. Paired with wide-leg bottoms in dark tones, the styling enhances the powerful presence of the serpent and highlights the artwork’s dramatic appeal.
