Producing
Top-Quality Down

The down and feathers used in UNIQLO products are sourced exclusively from waterfowl raised under strict ethical standards. These operations are conducted by just three facilities in China (for 2026 Fall & Winter) that demonstrate superb quality management.
Creating a quality product from natural materials begins with removing any foreign matter. The cleaning process is divided into stages. Beginning with a cleaning step, in which foreign matter is removed, the down goes through a washing step, where it is rinsed in water and washed with cleansers ahead of antimicrobial treatment. Next comes a multi-stage drying step, which leads into a cooling step where the feathers are fluffed while even smaller particles of unwanted material are removed. Lastly, in an inspection and packaging step, the down feathers are sorted by quality (1).

To remove any metal picked up from the spaces where the birds were raised, the material is subjected to deferrization, as part of a fifteen-stage panel of quality assurance testing (2). This testing also involves steps for assessing fill blend and fill power, cleanliness, oxygenation, turbidity, and pH, among which cleanliness holds top importance. Since waterfowl spend most of their life on land, their feathers can accumulate dust, dirt, grease, and bits of metal. Foreign matter is eliminated through high-temperature washing and drying steps, with an aim toward sterilization. Neglecting these crucial processes can lead to unwanted smells and allergenic products. To maintain strict quality standards, the washing steps use cleansers free from hazardous ingredients.

China produces about 40,000 tons of down per year. Yet only the top 10% of this satisfies UNIQLO’s exacting standards. Items utilize 750 fill power down,* which has exceptional heat retention. Down with higher fill power naturally forms clusters that have higher air content, giving them excellent warmth. As a standard,* UNIQLO uses a blend of 90% down and 10% feathers, giving items both superior warmth and lightness.

* Excludes items using recycled down

High fill power down is specially selected using a feather sorting machine (3). Down balls are blasted with a powerful current of air, so that only the choicest clusters remain. Sorting the down with a mind toward quality and efficiency helps to reduce energy use and environmental impact. Thanks to a fastidious quality control process, UNIQLO down items have become an indispensable part of how the world keeps warm in winter. In a word, they’re a masterpiece.

Making the Most of
Down

The secret to comfort is high fill power

Fill power is defined as the degree of expansion of 30 grams of feathers when subjected to a uniform load. A higher fill power means the down incorporates more air, giving even small amounts superb warmth and high performance. UNIQLO down uses 750 fill power or higher.* The result is a product situated nicely between more casual down and serious outdoor goods. The density and blend of fill, as well as the fabric, water-repellency, and sewing, all influence insulation.

The Golden Ratio: 90/10

Lacking a hard quill shaft, down has a shape that holds more air, for increased warmth. Feathers have a quill, giving them better flexibility, at the cost of insulation. Down items at UNIQLO use a ratio of 90% down to 10% feathers.* Adding feathers to the mix helps to ensure proper distribution of the fill. For just the right balance, a ratio of 90/10 gives items exemplary warmth while keeping things easy and light.

Keep it dry for longevity

Down’s sworn enemies are moisture and compression. It’s important to maintain their puffiness through routine care. After wearing, hang your down so that all sweat and moisture can evaporate. Warming your hands before touching the item can help you see if the down inside is compromised by dampness. In warmer months, avoid vacuum bags and instead hang your items up. All down items can be washed by hand. Don’t forget to hang them out to dry on clear days when the air is breezy.

Ayumu Hirano takes
UNIQLO down to the
next level

Unique Clothing images

Pro snowboarder Ayumu Hirano has been helping with product development since he became a UNIQLO ambassador in 2018. It all started with the hybrid down parka. Maintaining the toughness necessary for competition, this new item exhibited a greater range of motion and the warmth required for blizzarding conditions. It’s since become a wintertime essential, going through regular updates. In 2024, the outer was changed to a lighter shell material for an even more active fit. And in 2026, it was reborn once more, this time as the light down volume jacket.

“I used to avoid wearing down in competitions, concerned it was too heavy. But this is really light. Just the right fit for me, as someone who prefers what I wear on the slopes to be an extension of my wardrobe.”

The key is balancing warmth and lightness. Down is plenty warm, of course, but too much makes an item bulky. Searching for the right balance and a more athletic fit naturally led to a wider, shorter silhouette. “When you’re getting air, a long top simply doesn’t look right. That’s part of what makes this down so ideal.”

The fabric is a 20 denier ripstop nylon, chosen for its optimal balance of durability and lightness. “It doesn’t have the stiffness of a brand-new coat, so it feels broken-in from the first wear,” says Hirano.

It turns out that what works great on the slopes is also great for daily use. While some specs on this jacket differ from the coat worn by Hirano when competing, it has the same lightness and warmth and the same oversized silhouette.

“After practice, I’ll switch out of my snowboard pants into something more casual but leave on my down jacket while I go grab food. It looks great just the way it is and since it’s nice and warm, all you need is a longsleeved T-shirt. It’s so light. I can’t wait for you to try it out.”

Ayumu Hirano

Professional Snowboarder and Skateboarder

Born in 1998 in Niigata Prefecture. After winning a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Hirano won gold at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. He remains active on the global stage. These pictures were taken in his hometown of Murakami in Niigata Prefecture. “We’re heading into a new era,” says Hirano, standing before the Murakami Snow Research & Training Center, opened with support from UNIQLO. “Now that it’s possible to practice halfpipe without any snow, we’re seeing kids who are amazing after just one or two years. I hope that this facility helps whoever trains here to build confidence.”
