Hello,
Emma
Just eighteen when she won the 2021 US Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments in tennis, Emma Raducanu has since reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 10. Now that she’s a UNIQLO Global Brand Ambassador, we asked her some questions about tennis, fashion, and what comes next.
- Q1 : What’s your relationship with the suburban London tennis club where we shot this feature?
This is the first club I ever played at, almost so long ago I can’t remember. Every summer, they did an event called Hot Dog Doubles. Basically a mixed doubles competition. And afterwards, we all got hot dogs. The best part of the year. The people here are very friendly as well, very warm. And I love coming back here, because everyone knew me from when I was a kid, before I achieved anything.
- Q2 : You’ve played all kinds of sports since you were little. What made you focus on tennis?
My dad wanted me to try a little bit of everything. Tap dance, horseback riding, golf, basketball, go-karts, motocross. I really enjoyed horseback riding. The horse I rode was pretty chill. We didn’t get too far over the course of a half-hour lesson! Out of everything, I showed the most promise with tennis. It almost seemed like everything else was preparation for this. Touring and playing in international competitions has given me a sense of accomplishment and broadened my horizons.
- Q3 : Did you make the right choice?
I did. Traveling has been the greatest lesson I could ask for. I get to interact with all kinds of people, expanding my world view. Tennis also taught me how to control myself and overcome anxiety.
- Q4 : What was winning the 2021 US Open like for you?
I was a bit stunned myself, since I was eighteen at the time. I’m not sure I fully understood the way this fit in with the Grand Slam. It’s led to more chances and connections than I could ever have imagined. It’s like a dream, though the expectations and the judgment have got more and more intense. At times it’s been a heavy load. I’ve learned all kinds of things and I’m much stronger than before. I’m still growing, of course. I guess you could say I’ve gained the power to face whatever’s coming next.
- Q5 : How do you exert self-control during a match?
It’s hard to think positive all the time, but when things get tough, you have to do your best and focus on the point in front of you. Forget what’s happened. Just think about the next thing. That’s the only way to change things. I think about this all the time.
- Q6 : How do you stay fit with so much traveling?
I always rest up after playing. That’s essential if I want to do my best at the next match. I also make sure to switch things up. I might go for a walk, or read a book, or do some journaling. Sometimes I’ll visit a museum. I’m on tour for tennis about thirty-five weeks per year, so I put effort into building good relationships with the people who surround me. A strong support network is based on connection.
- Q7 : What books have you enjoyed lately?
I recently read former tennis player Andre Agassi’s autobiography Open and Matt Haig’s novel The Midnight Library. Open describes what Agassi was up to and how he built his career in startling detail. I was especially intrigued by the passage where he got out of his slump in the late 1990s by creating his own training regimen and finding his way back to the top. It speaks in depth about his early successes, and the lows he reached perhaps as a result of them. A lot of it was so relatable. The Midnight Library is the story of a woman mired in regret who gets the chance to go back and try out a different path, only to find that this other choice may not necessarily be the better one. I don’t read just fiction or nonfiction, I read all kinds of books.

- Q8 : Do you have any talents outside of tennis?
Finding new restaurants! I like checking reviews on Google for spots that aren’t so widely known yet. I guess you could call me a gourmet. I’m really confident about my skills.
- Q9 : What was your impression of UNIQLO before becoming an ambassador?
Everyone in London knows UNIQLO of course. Yet the overall impression is of comfortable, practical essentials. Not enough people realize how stylish a brand it is. Clare Waight Keller, who designs my uniforms, creates collections that draw from all her experiences and ideas. It’s really amazing.

- Q10 : What made you want to become an ambassador?
The brand’s value system aligns with the things that matter most to me. Quality and attention to detail, respecting yourself and others. It’s understated, firmly grounded. I love that.
- Q11 : What’s your favorite UNIQLO item?
The down jacket. I bought mine many years ago in London, on a frigid winter’s day. The pockets are lined with fleece. So warm! It was the first thing I ever bought from UNIQLO, and I still love to put it on.
- Q12 : What do you hope to do as an ambassador?
I’d like to help design the uniforms. I’ve never had a chance to offer input on my clothes before. It would be a dream to work with a designer as experienced as Clare. It’s great to have Clare’s high fashion experience reflected on the tennis court, and fun to imagine that the things I wear might spark somebody’s interest in tennis or UNIQLO. I also want to be a source of inspiration for girls. While we’ve been here taking photos, a number of girls have come up to me and told me: “You’re my inspiration.” That makes me really happy.

- W's corduroy mini skirt(UNIQLO and COMPTOIR DES COTONNIERS)
- Q13 : What’s essential for you in a tennis wear?
First impression. The way I look when I step onto the court plays a big part in my image, so if the uniform can help me express who I am, that’s a huge plus. I value a good fit that doesn’t flap around or get bunched up when I’m playing hard. And I need materials that feel fresh even if I’m sweating. These functionalities help me focus on the match. UNIQLO makes simple, elegant items from excellent materials. What more could you want!
- Q14 : If you were any animal, what would you be?
Great question! I guess maybe a panda? I’m always running around at tournaments. People think that I’m so diligent. But once I’m off the court, I take it easy, only moving if I have to. I’m maybe a bit aloof as well, sort of like a panda.
- Q15 : What are your goals for the next few years?
Athletes have such short careers. I’m going to keep doing my best and enjoying the process to the fullest. Of course I have concrete goals, but what matters most is focusing on each day at a time. If you obsess over results and put too much pressure on yourself, things tend not to go so well!
- Q16 : Where do you see yourself in twenty years?
I’d love to have my own gallery. I’m especially taken with works on canvas and sculpture in the vein of modern art. It’s amazing how differently everyone responds to art. I’d like to explore this as a curator and create a space that reflects my own sensibilities. That’s the dream.
