Since I started living in Portland, my morning routine of having a cup of coffee has changed to a cup of tea.

In New York, coffee was my body switch to wake up but somehow in Portland, it became unnecessary.

There are somethings you learn when you travel like I do which is that every city has their own style of a morning and your way to spend it will change.

I’m pretty flexible when it comes to adopting new preference and habits. We’re all free to do so and that tiny change may be a way for you to discover a whole new world.

There’s nothing more boring than tying yourself down to a set routine. It’s also important to keep your option not to resolve an issue, should there be one.

Jack asked, “What does it feel like to write on your journey?”

From a few years ago, I started writing down my thoughts and feeling as well as incidents that I didn’t want to forget. It wasn’t so much a journal but an essay.

I made it a point to always carry around a pen and a notebook so that I can write down things I thought were wonderful, important, or spoke the truth. Or very abstract discoveries and thoughts. I guess you can say it’s an act to make these encounters legible with my words or an effort to simply express the complex emotions no one has verbalized before. I would jot things down as though to be keeping a sketch of my days.

“When you are traveling, you can be more like yourself, like you can see a deeper part of your soul. I guess because you have a longer time to yourself. It’s like you find yourself trying to come to terms with that treasure deep inside, that emotion, your strength, your weakness, that core that you normally fail to see…”

This was my response to Jack.

“I see, I can understand that you are trying to face yourself to discover the person you are. I guess, for me that’s like me wearing a t-shirt. For you, it’s about writing what you discovered on your travels.”

Jack continued to talk as he played around with the stitching on the neck of his t-shirt. He had on his favorite T made with a sturdy cotton fabric.

“For me, t-shirt is the simplest piece of clothing, ever. It’s like you can’t hide yourself. It has the comfort of being naturally as you are but with the fear of exposing various aspects of yourself. But we are all imperfect and it’s natural to have the good and not-so-good aspects, and that is why you can like yourself. Or accepting that allows you to really be yourself. What I’m trying to say is that the emotions you have on your journey and the emotions I get when wearing a t-shirt is rather similar…”

Hearing Jack, I thought a t-shirt are not just a t-shirt but an amazing piece of clothing with this incredible philosophy-like profoundness.

“In the past, t-shirts were just an innerwear, so it was revolutionary to wear it as a proper piece of clothing. It’s like turning the conventions upside down and making a statement about what a casual fashion is. I assume it was unthinkable to go outside in t-shirts. I’ll bet it was also revolutionary that it became a tool to express yourself with printed messages and designs.”

“Exactly. T-shirts gave people the permission for everyone to enjoy fashion,” said Jack.

That’s when I thought about Asha. She searched for her style in fashion design in Paris but now she was trying to discover a new meaning in clothing, creating just t-shirts. After designing various types of cloths, she has come back to t-shirts.

“It doesn’t matter how important you are, you go home, you put on a t-shirt. Or you want to get into your t-shirt. Asha often says that’s the kind of t-shirt she wants to design. It is the most simple but the most difficult clothes to design…”

“I guess traveling is one way to be kind to yourself, not to lose yourself, and give yourself that emotional boost. I think wearing a t-shirt is somewhat similar to that,” Jack continued.

“I think everyone has a t-shirt that they look good in. Regardless of race, figure, occupation, lifestyle, or philosophy, it just works,” Jane added.

I opened my notebook and began to read the incident I had written down in the past. The first day I landed in the U.S. when I wondered the streets of San Francisco in the rain. I could never forget that t-shirt that kept me warm through my drenching and draining walk after landing.

Just like that t-shirt, I hope these words that I am writing will somehow help to give warmth to someone who may be traveling somewhere in the world someday…
