Our Day of Promise

That day, I saw Asha off at JFK as she left for Paris.

When we parted at the gate,
she said, “See you.”

I said, “Yeah, you let me know, anytime, if you need help,” and waved. Asha didn’t look back, kept on walking, and disappeared from my view.

We didn’t talk about our promise after five years, not one word. Because to us, five years was simply too long.

Can we actually keep a promise for five years? Despite having this overwhelming doubt, we had to make a promise or we simply could not bear the sheer pain of being separated.

On my way back from the airport, I thought about the smile Asha showed me before we parted.
“Five years…” I thought to myself.

From that point on, I buried myself in my work. Just as Asha was working hard to learn about fashion in Paris, I decided to dedicate myself to the antique book trade business I luckily encountered, and I thought about brushing up my skills in this profession.

I simply had to believe that we would come through for each other in the end.

For the next five years, I worked hard while flying back and forth between New York and Japan. The only letter I got from Asha was a birthday card, once a year, to my address at Jack’s apartment. There was always the message, in small letters, “Savor each day…” I can’t recall how many times I felt so lonely that I’d pick up the phone to call her, only to put it back down again. I knew that if I heard her voice, I would want to see her. This was the same feeling I had for my parents in Japan. Once you voice your emotions, “I want to see you,” that is all you would think about. That’s why I carried around the birthday card Asha sent me like a talisman and immersed myself in work and studies.

It was probably around year four. Our mutual friend, Rowena, told me that Asha had gone back to her home country of Ethiopia. She told me that Asha had written to her about it recently.

“Asha apparently left Paris and is now living in Ethiopia. I asked her when she was coming back to New York, and she hadn’t responded,” said Rowena.

As for me, I was literally spending half of the year in New York and half of the year in Japan. My antique book business was going really well.

Then, it was the end of year five. We promised that if we still wanted to see each other, we would meet up once again. It was the anniversary of the day we first met.

I had absolutely no idea whether Asha would actually show up, but I knew I had to be there on that day, at that place. At three in the afternoon.

My feelings for Asha had not changed, even after five years.

An Encounter with the Elderly

I realized that I unintentionally chose to wear a full-zip hoodie on this big day. It was Asha’s favorite.

We both loved hoodies and owned many, but this grey standard hoodie was my favorite and one of the few long-standing pieces in my wardrobe.

“Come to think of it, Asha and I had a matching pair of this one,” I thought and smiled. We bought the exact same one together.

Asha and I both loved simple clothes. Simple styling is something I had learned from Asha herself.

I got to our meeting place, The Coffee Shop, a little before three. Not many familiar faces, but it still had that lively atmosphere as the landmark café of New York.

I sat myself down at the table facing the street and ordered a cappuccino.

“I can’t find a seat, do you mind?,” asked an elderly gentleman.

It was customary for customers to share a table during the busy hours at The Coffee Shop. “Certainly, please,” I said.

“Thank you,” he said and continued, “are you Japanese?”

“Yes I am,” I responded. “I like Japanese people because they are so nice and polite,” he said, and continued to say, “Arigato,” with a proper pronunciation and took a bow. “This is a good café, indeed,” he said and smiled.

I looked at my watch and realized that it was past three. I looked around, but Asha was nowhere to be found.

I decided to take out a book from my bag and began to turn the page. It was one of my favorites, On a Chinese Screen by W. Somerset Maugham.

After a while, the elderly gentleman asked, “I’m sorry to bother you while you’re reading, but what are you reading?”

“Oh, don’t apologize,” I said, and I told him the title of my book. He said, “Wonderful, I have a copy at home. It is one of my favorite books.”

On a Chinese Screen was a true classic in travelogue, a collection of short stories about the people the author encountered through his travels across China.

“When I was young, I idolized Somerset Maugham and traveled around the world like he did.”

He then began to share stories from his journey through Europe, India, Africa, and Asia.

“That’s when I fell in love with this Chinese lady,”
he said, almost in a whisper, his eyes gazing afar.

Packed with Particularities

First, we studied how the hood keeps its shape. The result is a hood that looks great even when it’s not over your head, a result of the much trial and error. By using a polyester-mixed material inside the hood, the hoodie dries more quickly after a wash.

Ribbed edges were chosen for both sides of the front pockets for durability and a vintage taste. In addition to basic colors, this season, we have red and olive as new key colors.

Something good is bound to happen
on days you wear a hoodie.
I believe it so, even today.

What is “LifeWear story 100?”

At UNIQLO,
there exist these lines of clothes
which has remained for many years,
trend-neutral
yet never dated.
Out of the line-ups,
they are the unsung presence,
sitting quietly behind in TV ads.

Yet, they are the culmination
of the years of passion and devotion,
where UNIQLO sought to pursue
more comfort,
more durability, and
more quality.

They give shape and gravitas
to what and who UNIQLO is,
and what UNIQLO continues
to nurture with great care.

To go beyond yesterday,
to reach higher tomorrow.

When you take it in your hands,
when you try it on,
it softly speaks to you,
almost like a friend.

What is a rich quality
lifestyle?
How is such a quality day spent?
What does happiness mean to you…

And you will find yourself
surprised to discover that such
piece of clothing has existed.

What is the UNIQLO principle?
Why do we call clothing LifeWear?
What kind of clothes constitute
LifeWear?

Here, we go deep into
the root of LifeWear,
to know
and to tell.
And I hope to write
stories that revolve
around LifeWear and myself.

LifeWear story 100 will be
a story about a journey with me and LifeWear.
