Box Lunch by Mom

I got up earlier than usual in the morning of my date with Asha.

We promised that we will both come up with a plan so that we will get to know each other better.

After much deliberation, I decided that I want to share my dreams with Asha. If she knew what I wanted to do in my life, I figured that should tell her the kind of person I am. That was the only thing that came to mind. For me, my dream was the most important treasure.

And my dream was to give back to my parents. I’m sure there are much cooler dreams I could’ve thought of but this was the first thing that came to mind.

I had always kept them on their toes but they never failed to come to my rescue. They have always been on my side. My parents, my treasure.

Both mom and dad are your ordinary office workers but was extremely generous, curious, ready to learn, and have always faced up to the many challenges life had thrown at them. Veterans of life, I should say.

I wanted to make them happy, put them at ease, to make them feel incredibly happy. I wanted to do this in my own powers.

My dream is to give back to my parents. Nothing would make me happier for Asha to learn what amazing parents I have.

The best thing is for her would be to meet them in person but given the sheer physical distance, this was not possible. So what to do…

That’s when I remembered. When I was small, come the weekend, three of us would often go to this large park out of the way.

I remember the boxed lunch mom would make for those trips. It was simple, rice balls and some deli assortments but the taste of eating with them on a picnic sheet was so good, one that I still remember.

That taste was because of my mom’s love.
That joy was because of my dad’s generosity.

That’s when it hit me. If I make that tasty lunch box that my mom used to make for our lunch together, that might tell Asha about the kind of people my parents are. That’s it! I’ll pack the lunch and we’ll head for the park and do a picnic, just like how we used to do it.

The plan is set. I’ll make the lunch box for two for a picnic on the grass at Central Park.

The lunch box that my mom would make have different flavors of rice balls, accompanied by sausages, egg cakes, fried chicken, and apples for dessert.

I would prepare the fried chicken from the night before. On the day, the rice will be freshly cooked with which I’ll make the rice balls and do the other deli menus. I’ll ask Toko-san who looks after me in New York to give me some of the dried seaweed for the rice balls.

Will Asha like the menu? The thought just got me excited that I couldn’t fall asleep. Can’t wait.

The Ultimate Soft Material

Keeping the soft drape-like texture and the silky-smooth touch while the after-wash crease adds character – this is our premium blouse, the pride of UNIQLO. The secret is the material we developed with Toray, using the special hybrid spun yarn, combining the soft lustrous rayon and wash-resistant polyester.

We structured the fabric so that rayon material is dominant on the side that touches the skin so you enjoy the fine texture of rayon while achieving the easy-care after wash.

10 minutes before our meeting time, I got to Strawberry Fields in Central Park. Asha was already waiting on the bench.

“Morning, Asha. Wow, you’re early.”

“Good morning, I was so anxious that I decided to come early. Ooh, I like your shirt,” said Asha as tugged at the sleeve of my linen shirt.

“You look good in your blouse, too.”

I said as I copied her and tugged at the sleeve of her pink blouse, the soft rayon fabric.

It’s because of Asha that I started to compliment people on the clothes they were wearing. That was something I was too embarrassed to do but thanks to her, I can now do it naturally.

“It’s such a fine day, feels so good.”

“Yeah, I’m glad it didn’t rain. So what should we do?”

“After you,” she said in a playful way.

“Alright then, let’s walk a bit. For lunch, I brought our family picnic menu so let’s find a seat later for that.”

“What?! I brought a picnic lunch, too. An Ethiopian lunch.”

Asha said as she patted the tote bag she carried on her shoulders.

“Wow! So we’ll have a feast. Today’s going to be a Japanese and Ethiopian cuisine party.”

With that, Asha put her hands on my shoulders and said, “Sounds great! I’m excited!”

We walked from Strawberry to The Lake, then to Belvedere Castle. I was so conscious of Asha that I was all awkward and couldn’t chat as I used to. The silence, how nerve-wrecking that was.

“It’s awkward that we walk separately so can we be arm in arm?,” she said and slipped her arm around mine.

“See, this is more natural. Hey, we’re on a date today, you know,” she said with a smile.

“You have a point,” I said with a slight blush. But suddenly, all the tension melted away. Things eased up and we were able to enjoy our usual ordinary conversation.

The gentle texture of her pink blouse felt good. Her style with a navy pantskirt with white sneakers made was so fine, so feminine.

“I always think how stylish you are.”

“I wasn’t sure what to wear today but I thought I should just wear my favorite outfit.”

She said in a quiet voice as she touched the button of her blouse.

I held her hand. She held it right back.

What is “LifeWear story 100?”

At UNIQLO,
there exist these lines of clothes
which has remained for many years,
trend-neutral
yet never dated.
Out of the line-ups,
they are the unsung presence,
sitting quietly behind in TV ads.

Yet, they are the culmination
of the years of passion and devotion,
where UNIQLO sought to pursue
more comfort,
more durability, and
more quality.

They give shape and gravitas
to what and who UNIQLO is,
and what UNIQLO continues
to nurture with great care.

To go beyond yesterday,
to reach higher tomorrow.

When you take it in your hands,
when you try it on,
it softly speaks to you,
almost like a friend.

What is a rich quality
lifestyle?
How is such a quality day spent?
What does happiness mean to you…

And you will find yourself
surprised to discover that such
piece of clothing has existed.

What is the UNIQLO principle?
Why do we call clothing LifeWear?
What kind of clothes constitute
LifeWear?

Here, we go deep into
the root of LifeWear,
to know
and to tell.
And I hope to write
stories that revolve
around LifeWear and myself.

LifeWear story 100 will be
a story about a journey with me and LifeWear.
