In this special project, in which a new T-shirt was introduced every week for a year, UT was joined by the two publications of Weekly Shonen Sunday and Weekly Shonen Magazine, which celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2009. Dragon Ball” is a widely popular manga that was made into a television anime. The show is about a group of humorous and lovable characters who go on an exciting and large-scale adventure to locate seven dragon balls that promise to grant any wish, and the explosive battles against powerful enemies they keep meeting along the way. As the first art collaboration in history of Dragon Ball series, we worked with Kosuke Kawamura, a collage artist active in the fashion and street world, to create a special collection that can only be obtained with UT.

Anni Albers (1899–1994) was a German-born artist and designer famous for her groundbreaking contribution to the field of textile design. She was educated at the Bauhaus, a German art and design school in the 1920s; she experimented with unusual materials such as metallic threads and horsehair to create fabrics with abstract and geometric designs. This T-shirt is designed to show the carefully chosen colors and strong geometric composition of her work.

Sol LeWitt was a pioneer of conceptual art in the 1960s. He pursued a system of trying to recreate art from scratch by arranging geometric shapes and linear patterns in various configurations. This is a graphic T-shirt that allows you to appreciate that style fully.

“Idea” was first published in 1953. We teamed up with this graphic design magazine and carefully selected designs from all over the world, focusing on logos and messages that are a tried-and true method of T-shirt design.

This is an early project in which UNIQLO, as a company, began selling T-shirts featuring works of art that had, up until then, only been accessible at art museums, etc. A number of designs boldly arranging representative works by Lichtenstein, whose unique use of color and composition was impactful, were made available.

These UT are inspired by this manga which captures the reader’s attention with a world where humanity is forced to live in cities surrounded by enormous “walls” that protect them from gigantic man-eating humanoids referred to as Titans, and “Vertical maneuvering equipment” developed to combat the Titans.

T-shirts often reflect the thoughts, and trends of our times. Long before social media, T-shirts were a canvas on which people everywhere could freely express their messages. We returned to the origin of the graphic T-shirt and collaborated with three contemporary artists who lead the art scene in the U.S. and London.

Cali Dewitt
Cali Dewitt lives and works at Zuma Beach CA. He describes himself as a "multi-dimensional being" and tells us that he feels like he will be turning 100 next year. Dewitt is an artist and a designer, who has been exhibiting his work worldwide for the past decade, in addition to doing design work for cultural luminaries of the era.
