Our Tomorrow

Issue 03 2020 Fall & Winter

What is LifeWear magazine?

LifeWear is clothing designed to make everyone’s life better.
It is simple, high-quality, everyday clothing with a practical sense of beauty ingenious in detail, thought with life’s needs in mind, and always evolving.

As a way of helping people all over the world to explore the specifics of this clothing and the concepts behind its production, we founded LifeWear magazine.

Issue 03 2020 Fall & Winter

When we began putting together Issue 03 of LifeWear magazine, the idea was to do a feature on sustainability, a theme of the utmost concern to us, as an apparel company. But in the past six months, the entire world has changed. This is no time to preach about sustainability as if it were a passing trend. Instead, we took the opportunity to revisit such vital questions as what matters most to us, how we can be of service, and the meaning of “essential” with respect to clothing.

With this in mind, we shifted the theme to “Our Tomorrow,” and organized the issue around a free discussion of the future. The result is an assortment of thoughts on our current situation from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jil Sander, and Ryan McGinley, and on the dreams of children and what UNIQLO can do to help. Reasoning that we can only talk about the future if we know about the past, we delved into the legacy of architect Kenzo Tange by speaking with Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, which has archived his materials, and explored the design philosophy of German product designer and living legend Dieter Rams, and what it shares with LifeWear. On our cover, we’re proud to feature a sketch by artist Jason Polan, who passed away quite suddenly during production, from the American Museum of Natural History, one of his favorite places.
