More important than the aesthetics, inclusive design, or level of comfort, the real quality of a garment is seen and felt in its meticulous construction, soft feel, and durability of every detail that may not be obvious to the naked eye. FLEECE

Hoping our fleece styles will live long in customers' closets, we reviewed our archived problem areas and identified the piping around the sleeves, hem, and collar as areas of opportunity to improve durability. However, it is not a simple matter of upgrading the thickness of the yarn as that would compromise its main feature: its lightweight feel. So we came up with a unique solution to apply fine single stiching on the outside while applying chain stitching on the inside of the cuffs on our Sponge Fleece styles, and applying double stitching on both sides of the cuffs on our Furry Fleece styles. These special construction details make durability compatible with lightness.

Pocket lining plays an important role in the quality of a garment, even though it's rarely seen. Using the same material as the garment body would add unwanted thickness around the waist, so we developed Microfleece that's lightweight, heat-retaining, and soft to the touch to use for inner pockets exclusively. Creating material solely for this purpose involved an immense amount of time and effort but was necessary to achieve the cohesive tone and the flattering accent when the lining is slightly peeking out.

the outside to the inside

Breaking and shedding of the yarn were the weaknesses of our Furry Fleece, whose main feature is its cute shagginess. Using thickened fiber to solve this problem, however, will eradicate softness and lightness, while using fine fiber will degrade durability. UNIQLO Furry Fleece is the result of 3 years of repeated micro-level intensity tests. Our fleece products are shipped out of the factory only after having passed strict pilling and shedding tests performed by a third-party inspection organization, and a further UNIQLO self-imposed rubbing test. The quality of our products is controlled under these strict standards.

Of the many fleece outerwear styles, we have learned that customers tend to intuitively seek out "kawaii-ness" (cuteness) in our Furry Fleece line-up. With this in mind, our production team literally day-in and day-out wore fleece samples of various pile lengths and softness and held countless discussions as to how the furriness and fluffiness vary by each item. UNIQLO Furry Fleece, introduced in 2013, is the long-awaited result of one full year's research pursued together with our fiber development experts. (Truth be told, numerous fleece items were piled up high at our team members' homes.)

But problem areas such as breaking, shedding, and stressing of the yarn were seen for the first 3 years, which made our team ever more determined to pursue this. This became the creative force behind realizing the smooth softness that you'd want to rub your face against, the elegant sheen, and the durability fit for long-lasting wear. Our team's determination and trial-and-error results are reflected in every construction detail. UNIQLO FLEECE is still evolving after 25 years, so there is a good chance that our next season's line-up may yet again be improved for the better.
