VINTAGE CHINO:

LONG-LASTING STYLE

FOR A NEW DECADE

Long-time favorite

UNIQLO has made fine adjustments to the Men's Vintage Chino ever since we started selling them around 2009. With a structured look in fabric that's soft to the touch with and elegant sheen, these Chinos are now one of our must-have basics as they're durable enough for long-time use. Here's how we ensure this durability:

test

We tested our Vintage Regular Fit Chino in basic brown for abrasion and color loss versus number of washes. We compared 50 and 100 30-minute-cycle washes in a regular household washing machine.

50 Washes

At a glance, the item looks good as new, with minimal shrinkage, abrasion, and fraying.

Creases and marginal color loss are confirmed around pocket openings and belt loops, but these details lend an authentic vintage look and feel.

The photo shows the limited-edition Vintage Chino (style number 321-193064, color number 31) launched in 2017, damaged-process to recreate a 10-year vintage feel. We bio-stone washed them with pumice stones for a whisker effect, washed with large prickly beads for a distressed effect, and further bleached for 60 minutes.

In the past, we have sold Chinos tear-processed by applying these hard-wash, distressed, and bleach processes. They did cause some wear around pocket openings and edges, but overall the fabric remained intact, proving its reliable durability.

The secret to durability

lies in the fabric

and construction

We reinterpreted and kept updating
the original design for 10 years straight

The origin of Chino is said to be in the 1950s at West Point, the United States Military Academy. We started out with an objective to achieve its signature elegant sheen and durable structure but with a modern fit for comfort. The evolved all-new Chino fabric used for the New Vintage Chino is the result of 10 years of annual updates since the launch of its first model around 2009.

What is
West Point Chino?

West Point Chino is the fabric used for uniforms at West Point. It is durable and structured with an elegant sheen, and tends to soften with wear which is why it's still beloved by authentic vintage fans to this day.

The secret to durability lies in the fabric and construction

Elegant yet tough
on the outside.
Comfortable on the inside

In addition to the traditional qualities of West Point Chino fabric, UNIQLO's material is made to be soft on the inside for comfort, but we apply a different construction method on the outside to ensure durability. We settled on this method through trial and error and by closely controlling the integrated processes of spinning, weaving, constructing, and finishing.

STEP 1 Spinning

To achieve a smooth feel, we use a semi-combed yarn that loses 7%-10% of short fibers during the cotton spinning process instead of the standard carded yarn. We convert the warp yarn used on the outside into a double-folded yarn. We use a special technique to convert 2 under-twisted yarns into upper-twisted double-folded yarn to increase fabric strength. The weft yarn that comes into direct contact with the skin is soft and more comfortable thanks to the use of single yarn.

STEP 2 Weaving
3X1 TWILL COMPOSITION

STEP 2 Weaving

Clear diagonal twill is visible on the outer surface, whereas the inner surface is flat and smooth. As a result of constructing a 3x1 twill weave, a beautiful sheen appears on the outer surface, whereas the inner surface remains soft and less likely to loosen.

The foundation
of the sturdy
construction is invisible
on the outer surface

Our secret to making Chino fabric that lasts 10 years is to apply chain stiches on the inside. Double stiches are applied on the outer inseam, whereas chain stiches that follow the wearer's body movement are applied on the inside. Bar tacks are applied to reinforce belt loops and pocket openings where lining and fabric overlap.

Authentic details that adhere
fundamentally
to "vintage"

The characteristic details of the traditional 1950s West Point Chinos are its button and coin pocket. These two features must be included in order to earn the moniker "vintage" in its name. As such, instead of a wood-grain plastic button, a polished button carved out of natural coconut shell is used, and the coin pocket is situated above the front right regular pocket as it is the on West Point Chinos. The 3 solid pillars of fabric, construction, and details are what uphold the durability and the authentic look of UNIQLO's Vintage Chinos.

It's a reassuring feeling to own a pair of Chinos. Their texture and your attachment are sure to grow as they age for 1 year, 5 years, and 10 years, truly becoming vintage of your very own.
