Different Ways to Store Your Sweater
Winter! People around the world consider it a magical time. Santa Claus, presents, snow, fun, and all the magically lovely things in the world happen during winter. It is also the time when people visit their near and dear ones during the holidays.
Winter is no doubt one of the most celebrated seasons and, for some, most fashionable too. With winter comes out coats, sweaters, lovely stockings, cute hats, flashy scarves, and lots of other woolen accessories. While coats are easily handed over in the coat rack, sweaters, when hung, tend to have parchy shoulders, which can’t get a redo.
So here we answer the age-old question that worries you during winter. How to store sweaters?
Best Ways to Store Sweaters
Sweaters are made of woolen, and hence they are thick. Their thickness can cause storage problems, and this can be very frustrating. Many times sweaters have lost their lives untimely owing to the storage inaccuracy and inefficiency.
To deal with this, you can-
1. Stack on Shelves
Stacking up on shelves is one of the best ways to save space when storing sweaters. Fold the sweaters and place them neatly on a pile of 5. The pile of 5 helps you grab the sweater on the go, without the risk of the pile falling apart.
2. File on a Cabinet
For the thinner types, one can just fold them and keep them in a dresser drawer. Thus they are easy to view and pull out while also not disturbing the rest.
3. Folding on Top of a Hangar
This is the best way to fold bulky sweaters. Start by folding the sweater in half, then place the sweater on the hangar. Take care that the hangar hook pokes out of the crease of the armpit. Following, fold the sleeves and the body over the hangar.
4. Hanging
If you have no other option than to hang them, hang them on a soft padded hangar or a wooden hangar. Make sure your hangar does not stretch the sweater too much to damage it.
5. Keep them Clean
Brush off any hair residue, dust, or fluff from your sweaters before storing them. Also, regularly vacuum and dust your closet. Ensure that the fibers are clean, and nothing is sticking to them.
6. Remove Stains
Any stains on the sweater have to be immediately looked into and cannot be left for a longer time. Also, blot the stains instead of rubbing them. Try cleaning them fresh off as that will cause the least damage.
7. Removal of Pilling
Sweaters rubbing together when worn cause pilling. Before storage, rub them off, or they can get worse next season.
8. Wash Care
Follow all wash care instructions, as printed on the label. If the wash care says dry clean, get a dry clean only for your sweaters’ longer life.
9. Wash Care
Follow all wash care instructions, as printed on the label. If the wash care says dry clean, get a dry clean only for your sweaters’ longer life.
10. Do not let the Perfume Settle
Keep your sweaters away from cologne and deodorants. They tend to damage the fibers.
Folding your Sweaters
When storing sweaters, ensure they are folded properly. If they are stretched on one side, then they tend to stretch out over time.
You can find different ways to store your sweaters. But the basic tip is to make sure you fold so that the arms are neatly folded at the back of the sweater. Try creating a rectangular shape when folding, as it is the best way to preserve it.
Tips to follow before You Store your Sweater
Sweaters are something worn everybody, babies and elders in the family wear them. College kids wear them and so do their working parents. But every one of them needs to know the best way to handle and store sweaters.
- The first step would be to categorize what you need and what you don’t. If there are sweaters which you have grown out of, take them out of your closet. That clears up a lot of clutter. How to decide on it? If you don’t remember when you wore it last, it’s time for it to go.
- Next, clean your sweaters before you put them on the rack or in the wardrobe. The best bet here is to get them cleaned by dry cleaners and not throw them in the washer. Make sure they are dry and clean before storage. Often the dry clean plastic bags can have some moisture left, and they mustn’t stay with the sweater till next season.
- Arrange your sweaters by type. For example, woolen ones can be stored in airtight boxes. But cashmere ones would need canvas storage bags for extra breathing space. The same goes for alpaca sweaters.
- Try storing them in a place where the bags can get some air. A basement or attic is the wrong place to store sweaters. Dry areas are best for storing them.
- To ward off, any moths, throw in some cedar or a few silica gel sachets after you are done packing.
Last but not the least, we have a favorite sweater. And like everything else, that sweater also needs a break. So when not necessary, try changing your mood with a jacket or coat. It will be fun! Also, if you are a fan of makeup, try wearing a scarf, so it breaks the contact between the sweater and your makeup, thus lessening the chances of damage.
