Join Roger on the fourth stop of his world tour as he paints, eats and cycles his way through Shanghai – home to 24 million people, the third largest city in the world.

Roger kicks off his trip to Shanghai with a visit to the studio of Master Zhu. Once inside, Roger takes off his shoes and dips a toe (and brush) into Master Zhu’s ink to get a sense of the power that calligraphy holds as one of the highest art forms in China.

Roger faces an unexpected challenge in a game of table tennis against one of China’s star players, seven-year-old Guo Duoer (aka Pineapple). As the game heats up, Roger finds his rhythm, but eventually loses to Pineapple after the second match point.

3. The flavours of Guizhou

In a town with so many great culinary options, it’s hard to go wrong when picking a restaurant. Roger makes the right move and ends up at Maolago, an ode to the hometown flavours of Southwest China.Chef Zou Mingyang prepares their signature dish — tomato sour soup — for Roger, transporting him to the mountains of Guizhou, where the tomatoes are grown.

Roger meets up with new friend and Asian Heptathlon Champion Nina Li Zheng for a nighttime bike ride along Bei Suzhou Road. Over the course of the night, they participate in a game of Jian Zi; they chat about recovery and resilience over dim sum; but most of all, they get to experience the magic of Shanghai after sundown.
