Marimekko is a Finnish design house founded in 1951, which is noted for its colourful and bold graphic prints. With some 3,500 prints created over the years, these iconic designs prove their timeless appeal as they are reborn time and time again in thousands of imaginative colour palettes. Here are the four patterns incorporated in our UNIQLO x Marimekko Autumn/Winter 2024 limited edition collaboration collection.

Kimalainen (bumblebee in English) is an exuberant stylised floral pattern that evokes the atmosphere of Slavic folk tales.

In 1961, Maija Isola spent many evenings and nights working in Marimekko’s print factory – painting in gentle, sweeping brushstrokes to the sway of music. Metre upon metre of new patterns emerged. It was on one of those nights that her Koppelo (female capercaillie bird in English) pattern of stylised natural forms was born.

Marimekko pattern: Seireeni
Design: Maija Isola, 1964

While travelling in Greece in the early 1960s, Maija Isola got inspired by the movement of water and depicted it across several prints, including Seireeni (siren in English) from 1964. Named after the mythological sirens, the design recalls the enchanting singing that lured sailors into dangerous waters.

The expressive Suomu (fish scale in English) pattern is one of the many Marimekko classics created by Annika Rimala. Variety, distinctiveness and timelessness were characteristic features of her print designs.
