Recycled cashmere, the UNIQLO way
UNIQLO is working towards using 50% recycled and lower impact materials by 2030. To reach this goal, we need to break free from the cycle where clothes that are no longer worn are simply thrown away. Through the RE.UNIQLO program, pre-owned clothes are given new life, contributing to a circular society. We started with our down recycling process and products in 2020 and now we’re focusing on cashmere. This scarf is UNIQLO's first effort to recycle the fabric, which is renowned for its softness and superior warmth. Cashmere knitwear collected in RE.UNIQLO recycling boxes at stores throughout Japan is carefully transformed into cashmere yarn that makes up 30% of the final product. Express your support for the RE.UNIQLO program by trying one of 2,020 scarves knitted from yarn reclaimed from about 1,181 recycled jumpers.
To minimise damage to the recycled cashmere, it is not bleached. Instead, the fibres are all dyed black and are then mixed with white virgin wool to create a beautiful grey. Recycled cashmere fibres become shorter during the recycling process, making the yarn easier to break during spinning. Thanks to the advanced technology of Japanese spinning mills, we've managed to include 30% cashmere, without compromising on fabric quality.
