YOON of AMBUSH speaks about her first UT collection!
AMBUSH Creative Director, YOON is known for refined designs inspired by various cultures. We interviewed YOON about our upcoming UT collaboration and how she became the fashion industry's "It Girl".
Our UT collaboration incorporates the same colour palette as the AMBUSH Spring-Summer collection. The collection features Minnie Mouse designs from a cool and fresh perspective.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION
The new capsule collection from AMBUSH Creative Director YOON and UNIQLO introduces UT as more than just T-shirts. Featuring Mickey’s girlfriend Minnie Mouse, the collection consists of clothing and accessories in pink, mint green, and black — "The colour palette of this year’s Spring-Summer collection for AMBUSH" says YOON. She designed the collection — including pants and an athleisure-inspired jacket (which can also be worn as a dress) — so they can be easily coordinated and families can wear together.
FROM HOBBY JEWELLERY MAKER TO PROFESSIONAL DESIGNER
I studied graphic design in college" YOON says. "Unlike in Japan, U.S. college gives many opportunities to give presentations in class. It was through these presentations that I discovered the love of creating — especially making things by hand. I decided that’s what I wanted to do.”
She attended college in Boston, where she met VERBAL — a successful artist who is also her partner. They met in a church — one might say it was divine intervention! After graduating from college, she worked at a design firm in Boston until she followed VERBAL’s advice and moved to Tokyo in 2002.
“In the beginning, I worked as a stylist for VERBAL and designed T-shirts" she says. "The hip-hop scene in Japan at the time was full of stereotypical imagery, which I didn’t like, so I styled VERBAL with high-brand products that he liked and coordinated with really eye-catching jewellery. I especially liked making jewellery — the process was so fun! I created this collection called “POW!” — necklaces and rings based on the sound effect balloons in U.S. comic books — and Kanye West, our friend, really liked them. He began introducing my work to everyone he knew, and before I knew it, I was getting a lot of inquiries.
Eventually, YOON had to decide between making jewellery as a hobby or establishing her own brand. In 2008, she launched AMBUSH and by 2012, she expanded into clothing design.
