UNIQLO Celebrates World Clean Up Day

    Sep 19, 2022
    SOCIAL INNOVATION
To celebrate World Clean Up Day, UNIQLO teams across the world hosted local clean up events.
As a brand, UNIQLO is committed to reducing waste and improving the lives of our customers and the environment.

As part of Uniqlo’s goals for 2030 towards Sustainability, a key focus is to realize "Zero Waste" by reducing, replacing, re-using, and recycling materials used in the process of delivering clothes to customers.

In conjunction with our global JOIN campaign and to celebrate World Clean Up Day, UNIQLO teams across the world hosted local clean up events. Clean Up Day presented an opportunity for employees to think about the issues of marine garbage while cleaning together in the local community.

In Australia, our Uniqlo Melbourne team worked with local volunteer group BeachPatrol and visited New beach, Port Melbourne. BeachPatrol are an organized network of volunteers, who formed to help clean beaches, street and parks. They raise awareness and empower communities to reduce plastic pollution and other litter in the environment.

To help communities keep their beaches litter-free, the Beach Patrol Waste Audit initiative also taught our team how to properly identify, collect and sort trash for recycling. The team collected 857 pieces of litter (13.1kgs) from the beach with 55% of the rubbish made of up of hard and soft plastic litter that cannot be recycled.

BeachPatrol Port Melbourne kindly provided us with the tools, bags and knowledge we needed for the activity, and we look forward to doing more in the coming months in all our communities.

The litter data collected goes into the LitterStopper app, which feeds into Victoria’s DELWP Litterwatch database so is truly helping to make a difference in the long term.

So what impact does plastic have on Marine life and how can we help?

In addition to World Clean Up day, as part of our recent JOIN Campaign we spoke with Dr. Keith Alverson, former director of the International Environmental Technology Center of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP-IETC), about plastic pollution and the frameworks in place to address it.

Read the interview here and discover what the world must start doing to reduce plastic waste..

Uniqlo has begun eliminating the use of plastic for packaging of certain specific items such as room shoes, and we are continuing to review how we can extend these measures. We encourage everyone to use a reusable bag when they shop in our stores. Bring you own or you can also purchase our Reusable tote bag in store.
