Outdoor Life, Connected by the Desert
The desert stretches endlessly, marked by the unique branches of the joshua trees and massive crags standing among them. But town is only a short drive away. This is the landscape of Joshua Tree National Park, located about 220 km east of Los Angeles.
All four of the people photographed have some connection with this place. Emi Matsushima, a model and actor based in LA, and Xavier Mozejewski, who works in the arts for visual media and enjoys mountain biking, came here for the climbing. Their friends, the artist Nathini van der Meer and freelance photographer Benjamin Guzman, live here full time.
“Lots of artists and creatives are moving to the desert from big cities,” says Nathini. “There’s a special community here. People often work remotely.” Relocating to Joshua Tree three years ago, she built a house on the edge of the desert, where she goes horseback riding on the weekends. Ben has enjoyed going out on hikes almost every week since moving here in late 2019, and spends the evenings watching shooting stars go by, a familiar sight. Living inproximity with nature, while treasuring human interaction. Life here in this desert town strikes just the right balance.
