SELVEDGE

SELVEDGE

Raw denim is often referred to as selvedge, however 'selvedge' has nothing to do with the material or the wash of your jeans, but is a reference to the finish. Distinguished by white cuffs and bright red stitching at the bottom, these are the jeans of choice for men who like to cuff or pin roll their jeans. For a relaxed transitional outfit pair with one of our luxurious cashmere range.

  • A CRAFT,
    NOT SCIENCE

Kaihara was the first to introduce the rope-dyeing machine to Japan. It produces the "rin-dyed" threads that experienced master craftsmen use to create the characteristic fades in denim. Just as the name of the machine suggests, the threads undergo a repeated process where they are bundles into a rope and dipped in indigo dye. Once removed, they are allowed to oxidize in the air.

  • WHEN TRADITION MEETS
    TECHNOLOGY

The process of producing Kaihara denim begins in state-of-the-art facilities with how the yarn is spun. In factories equipped with cutting-edge technology, not available overseas, the process is strictly controlled by computers to prevent the occurrence of defective yarn.

  • THE PAST PRESENTS
    THE FUTURE

Denim manufacturer Kaihara is one-of-a-kind, with its blend of the old and the new. A variety of different looms are constantly in motion, from modern computer-controlled models to rare old-fashioned shuttle looms, still in use today. The beautiful, smooth fabric produced by old-fashioned looms during the "vintage" era allowed that crafting selvedge denim to experience a classic material abundant in rustic charm.
