After learning that UNIQLO’s Beauty Light Wireless Bra is going to be better than ever this spring, we met with its Development Team. The Beauty Light Wireless Bra was already an innovative item that had changed the common perception of bras due to its elastic cups. Here then is the first half of the full inside story on the item’s development!

The Birth of the Beauty Light Wireless Bra

UNIQLO’s Beauty Light series is now the first name in wireless bras in Japan. There are several surprising anecdotes about the item’s development!　And we asked the two who were in charge of the item’s development to recall a bit of the item’s history.

What led to the creation of the Beauty Light Wireless Bra?

Ms. A
The base of today’s Beauty Light Wireless Bra was made in 2016. Wireless bras with molded cups were still rare at the time in Japan, yet here we were, about to introduce such a bra.

What was the response like?

Ms. A
Fantastic. To be honest, its popularity exceeded our personal expectations (laughs). That’s how little we knew about the potential of wireless bras in Japan at the time.

Ms. S
During the development stage, we had over 100 people try the item. We repeatedly made adjustments on the basis of their suggested improvements before offering the item in the spring of 2017. The TV commercial starring Nozomi Sasaki was big at the time, too.

Was the structure of today’s Beauty Light bra complete at this time?

Ms. A
No. To be honest, we significantly revamped the bra in 2019. The difference is difficult to visually spot, but the very design is completely different.

Significant Revamping in the Spring of 2019
Through the New Concept of Elastic Cups

The Beauty Light Wireless Bra was a bigger hit than expected. So, why was it significantly revamped? Let’s find out!

① Highly elastic, wavy cups mold around the bust’s natural curves.
② Concentric incisions enable flexing that accommodates the bust’s volume.

③ Built-in plastic parts confer comfort and shape beautiful bust lines.
④ The bust’s outward spillage is stopped.

Why did you completely revamp the bra?

Ms. S
At UNIQLO, the more we listened to the customers the more determined we were to “make a wireless bra that was ideal for each and every bust.”

Ms. A
So, we completely improved the very design of the existing Beauty Light Wireless Bra.

Ms. S
The biggest change is the inclusion of elastic, molded cups.

Ms. A
These are the actual cups.

Wow! They have a strange design. There are small incisions here and there.

Ms. S
The cups can stretch to fit the bust’s shape because of these incisions. They’re what help produce a comfortably snug fit.

Naturally, bust sizes and shapes vary from person to person. But this design seems to enable a fit that’s ideal for all.

Ms. S
Numerous fittings were essential for accommodating every bust shape with a limited size lineup. At the time, we had upwards of 136 women from 11 countries and regions help us.

Ms. A
By the way, for each size, we finely adjust the number and the locations of the incisions as well as the materials. One of the bra’s key features is this: We adopt the best features and designs after repeated tests.

Results Exceed Expectations!
The Path to Creating an Even Better Version

The Beauty Light Wireless Bra was significantly improved in the spring of 2019. Improvements were made to provide an even better fit for the fall and winter model of the same year. The inside story on the everyday efforts to improve the bra is a must read!

What are the features of the 2019 fall and winter season model?

Ms. S
We changed the under section’s design to increase ease and comfort, while retaining the snug fit.

In addition, in preparing for the coming season’s 2020 model, we fully re-visited the cups’ thickness, amount of softness, and the number of concentric incisions, and more. We sought out the best figures for each size so that the bra would both feel and look great.

The 2020 model has finally arrived this spring!

Regular ----- Cotton ----- Lace

The 2020 spring and summer season model is available in on-trend colors, like mint green and lavender, in addition to staple colors, like black and beige. It also comes in the different fabrics of cotton and lace, so the new model offers the added attraction of letting the wearers choose from a big variety of colors and fabrics in accordance to mood.

Comfortable, unprecedented fit

The bra has built-in elastic cups that freely flex to fit the bust’s size and shape. It shapes beautiful bust lines yet it isn’t prone to showing through clothing.
