Volleyball
An attacker on the volleyball team, Grace is currently a junior at Harvard. Her academic focus is human evolutionary biology. “I’m interested in studying the big picture of our species. Not so much the chemical aspects, but more like where we came from and why, and what effect we have around the world,” says Grace. “I’m also a big fan of theater and do some acting as well.” Equally comfortable in a sporty flannel or a traditional tilden vest, Grace exemplifies the lifestyle of the scholar-athlete.

When we visited Cambridge for this feature, Harvard University was in the midst of graduation. The streets were full of people there to attend the magnificent proceedings. Crowds flocked to the Harvard Coop, just outside campus, to purchase branded sweatshirts and other sportswear.
To get to know a place, it’s best to use your feet. And what better place to start than Newbury Street, a mile-long promenade of clothing stores, including UNIQLO, just ten minutes away by car, across the Charles River from Cambridge. Here, the younger crowd favors comfortable, casual sportswear options like hoodies with leggings or shorts. Dressed in these classic, sporty styles, they grab food in one of the fun cafes or enjoy shopping the strip. Sportswear is a natural counterpoint to the historical cityscape of brick buildings. In the handful of days we spent in Boston, we encountered this atmosphere wherever we went.

Everywhere we turned, we saw a real-life application of the notion of Sports Utility Wear, as proposed by UNIQLO. What’s more, all the people dressed this way exuded health and self-esteem. Case in point, each of the student athletes that we interviewed looked right at home in these sporty styles, in keeping with their positive and charming personalities.
In the 1960s, the legendary Japanese fashion tome Take Ivy immortalized the Ivy style for an era, demonstrating how sports were a seamless extension of everyday life. Here in Cambridge, a modern version of that style endures. Over fifty years since its publication, daily life has changed in countless ways. Yet one thing that hasn’t changed, in all this time, is the vivacious style so fundamental to the sports traditions which are such a deeply rooted part of life in these two cities. It’s hard not to consider this when faced with the lively presence of these exemplary student athletes.
